hi =)

So what hapened?

Now there is a huge white bar up top with my open tabs.

I prefer it how it was in v88

How do I get it to look like it was before the update?

Thanks)

(it really is terrible now, and while i always promoted FF to whoever, I think this unwanted change makes me want to look elsewhere, sadly)

I reverted to the last version and am not udating anymore... if it doesnt get fixed to how it was, i will be moving....

here is the last version for anybody who cannot use it this way: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/88.0.1/

thanks for a nice run, mozilla=) - I have been with you since the beginning... cannot like you like this anymore... (tears in eyes)

edit: i had issues downgrading and my profile not being accepted... had to do a system restore... I will stick with v88 ...

You didn't allow much time for an answer...

If you prefer the old "Default" theme that had a navy blue background behind the tabs, you can use an add-on theme such as the following:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/photon-colors/

Alternately, you can use this temporary preference in Firefox 89 to revert most of the tab bar and address bar changes. However, since this was retained just for testing, it might be glitchy.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.proton.enabled and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch between true (new UI) and false (old UI)

Hello Jscher=)

Thanks for your quick reply=)

Yes, I didnt allow a lot of time - Just as the update didnt leave me much time a lot of time when uglifying the GUI and usually superb experience of firefox... - Serioulsly... (end of rant)

I wasnt even expecting a reply... The post was more of an observance.. ;) (and some frustration venting) - I wasnt even properly awake when the downgrade happened - I just had to rush here to prevent any more damage and loss of marketshare because of this silly new GUI. The only way to solve this is not to install some half-assed themes, but to give the user a choice of skins. "classic" and "fugly", erm, i mean: "new") This would help immensely in my eyes...

I will check out your wonderful "old gui" tip asap.- Thank you very much of making me aware of this.=)

in the mean-time I have downgraded back to v88... Also, created a policies.json file so Firefox will not ask me to update anymore.

For those who dont want to be reminded of the terrible update which is v89, simply add this to your v88 Firefox and enjoy v88 nag-free:

WINDOWS:

1. CreateFolder : C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\distribution

2. Create Txt File with following content:

{ "policies":

 {
   "DisableAppUpdate": true
  }

}

3. Save text file and rename it to : policies.json

4. Place the policies.json file in the "distribution" folder you created

MAC:

1. Create a directory called "distribution" in the Contents/Resources directory

2. Create Txt File with following content:

{ "policies":

 {
   "DisableAppUpdate": true
  }

}

3. Save text file and rename it to : policies.json

4. Place the policies.json file in the "distribution" folder you created

Thanks again for your help, jscher) - I will check out your old gui trick soon. - For now , I am happy with v88=) Also, thank you to the firefox community and contributers. you are doing fantastic work. - I really hope you can add the "classic gui" as an official feature. (v89 is really a step in the wrong direction, sadly)

Thanks all =)

Have many good times=)

edit: hmm, even after adding that json file, FF still asks me if i wanna update... heck.... :P

Lots of people, and most seniors first have no idea what you are talking about with your "code" suggestions. Second, in my senior experience, any time that I have attempted to do anything such as you suggested the result has been that my laptop is rendered useless. Even more functions become screwed up.

FIREFOX has fully embraced ageism with version 89.

It is time for people in charge of FIREFOX to realize that most people want to use their computers for end directed purposes. NOT because they, like some who post, and evidently those who cooked up 89, think it fun and satisfying to spend their time interacting with a machine. We don't like "code". It is not enjoyable for us to manipulate or write or have anything to do with "code". If FIREFOX wants to be a browser used only by 25 year olds, keep- it up. 89 might get me off to another browser just for self-preservation. It is horribly unusable. A complete ruination of FIREFOX. I'm astounded that FIREFOX people could so cluelessly dump this on older users.

I'm not a fan of tabs in general. I prefer to have new windows open and show in the task bar at the bottom of my screen. Plus, the tab bar takes up valuable space on my small laptop screen. Is there any way to eliminate the use of tabs and have things open in new windows? This is how I had it set up until version 89.

How were you hiding the tabs bar in Firefox 57-88? Your custom style rules in your userChrome.css file might need an update.

If you are on Windows, there is a setting on the Options/Settings page to show every tab on the Task Bar, not just individual windows. In U.S. English, it's labeled "Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar".

It's been so long since I hid the tab bar in previous versions that I'm not sure how I did it. I did try a few of your suggestions from the other posts and it is now moderately tolerable! :o) I would like, someday, to be able to hide the tab bar. Perhaps Firefox will come to my rescue in the future!
