I'm fed up with the lack of support from Firefox. This issue has been going on for three weeks. The last Firefox update crashed TWICE! When I opened a Google/Firefox, An Update window popped up. Since I normally let them download or whatever they do, I wasn't concerned. Then it showed an "Error". I didn't see an "Error Code Number or Name" as it disappeared quickly. I tried to open Firefox/Google. To my surprise, all I got was a Blank Window. I tried clicking on the "Home Icon". Nothing changed. I tried my Bookmarks. No affect. I WAS Signed In. I tried finding the Fictional "Firefox Support". I got nowhere. I would've Googled the issue, but I couldn't even use that. Nothing Worked. I finely decided to download a NEW Firefox/Google. Once I did, it worked fine all day. The next day, I opened the newly Downloaded one. Again I was greeted by the Firefox "Update" It started, then showed an Error. Again, I tried to open Firefox/Google. I got the same blank page as before. I decided to Remove, ALL Firefox/Google. from my Computer. Then I download another New Firefox. I made ONE change. I stopped Firefox from Updating Automatically. Day three, I opened Firefox, I opened normally... Almost. Now I have the SAME Firefox Update waiting. If I let it Download, it may Crash again. I lost ALL of my Bookmarks too. I went to the Recommended Firefox Site to retrieve them... It was a LIE! Now I have the SAME Firefox Update waiting. I have NEVER missed an Update Let me guess what Firefox is going to say. That is IF they reply at all; No one else reported this issue. ( And I have Ocean front property in Arizona). Make sure your operating system is up to date. (I must be too stupid to keep my system up and maintain this Machine). I should upgrade to the (The Digital Pile of...... that goes by the name) Windows 10, and (The Garbage called) Google Chrome. (Why would I Downgrade to one System that didn't work when it was released, a Browser that was Garbage when it was offered the first time (In 2008), and they WON'T Fix? I'd be better off taking a hammer to my PC. and my own head).

Just a quick note. When I first signed up for Google (Prior to the 2008 Google Chrome fiasco.) my Gmail stopped working. I could receive Mail, but I couldn't Open, Read, Delete, or anything else. This lasted for Five Years. I tried getting Help. I never got a reply from anyone. Then it started working. No explanation from Google.

Don't bother telling me "Well... It is Free". It isn't.

Have you been using a Firefox account? Your bookmarks will sync with the account. Besides, to defend Firefox slightly, I understand you may find it frustrating, it happens to all of us, software isn't perfect. Nevertheless, Mozilla itself is a non-profit; they don't have the staff, time, budget or resources of let's say Google, Samsung, Apple or Microsoft. Please understand that any support you get it usually just volunteers (Like myself), or from the small amount of employed staff, so try to be patient.

I would suggest sticking to stable Firefox releases and using a Firefox account for syncing of your settings and bookmarks, I've never had a problem with this personally.

I read your post twice but I don't understand the current status of your Firefox.

Your Firefox reported to the forum that it is the current version, Firefox 74.0, so there should be no update waiting. But your Firefox still wants to update right now?

With respect to lost bookmarks, does anything in the following article help: Recover lost or missing Bookmarks?

I've had Google/Firefox since 2006, or 2007. I don't think I should have to wait Five years to get anything to start working. Three weeks is too long. Five years is ridiculous. "Stable Firefox Releases"? The "Update" was from Firefox. Just like every other Firefox Update I've gotten since I signed up. I'm not going to just let any Site Update my Firefox. I won't allow any Download or Update that wasn't from a Site other than the original. I wouldn't have a P.C. for long if I did that. I'm not as stupid as I look. Again, I still have the last Firefox Update waiting. It's the same one that crashed everything twice. That's why I stopped the automatic Updates from them. I know nothing about Syncing. I don't trust any of the new garbage. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I can live without the lost Bookmarks. It saved me the trouble of going through each one, and deleting them one at a time. "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain". This machine opens faster now than it did new. Adding more Bull-Ends might slow it down.

The Current Status? Either the "Forum Report" is wrong, OR it's because I deleted Firefox, and Google the second time, then Downloaded NEW... Again. Hmm, could that be why it says I have the latest version? Still, several times a day I'm reminded of it waiting. I don't want to open it until I know it's safe. My Norton Security says it is, but it still crashed Firefox/Google Twice. I'm in no mood for a third time. Maybe next time it reminds me, I'll see if there's a "Learn More" on it. Although, I don't recall seeing that feature. I can live without the lost Bookmarks. It saved me the trouble of going through each one, and deleting them one at a time. It's kind of nice having only 15.

Hi, you said in your first post When I opened a Google/Firefox, An Update window popped up. This might be just about the terminology, but Firefox hasn't used an update 'window' for years. A genuine update shows as a small dropdown (doorhanger) from the 3-bar menu. If you are getting anything else it may be convincing fake, which clicking on could cause all sorts of unknown malware issues. If that's the case, please provide a screenshot: How do I create a screenshot of my problem?.

If you open Options > (General) > Updates, you can verify whether you are using the latest version which is 74. If you are, you should not be getting any update notifications. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/releases/

If you have any add-ons, hold down the Shift key when you start Firefox to start in Safe Mode. More - Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If it works in Safe Mode, disable any theme or extensions you have - 3-bar menu > Add-ons > Themes/Extensions, then restart Firefox; now if it's still OK, re-enable them one by one until you find the culprit. You may need to restart Firefox after enabling some extensions.

When I removed Firefox the second time, I downloaded a New, it was/is (Most likely) the Latest version not the previous version. Isn't that what it does? Download the very Latest Version? It would make sense.

This is getting ridiculous. I've about had enough of this Wild Goose Chase. Keep telling me things that don't exist are somewhere their not.

I hope all of you had a good laugh.

Scribe,

Just a little "UPDATE" for you... I just received a New "UPDATE" today (04/04/20) from Firefox, AND in the same manner as mentioned previously.

I BLOCKED it, because I can't trust anything someone with, working for, or connected to Mozilla Firefox says. No last laugh for anyone. Firefox still doesn't work right, BUT I'll live with it, because It's better than the (Fictitious) "Community Support" provided on this Site.

I believe one Browser set the Standard for the way ALL Browsers operate.

Said same has been going down hill ever since. Good riddance.

Hi kingofazzholes, the latest update is needed to patch a security vulnerability that is being actively exploited on the web. See: https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2020-11/

I followed the link, there appears to be two "CVE-2020-6819: Use-after-free while running the nsDocShell destructor", and "CVE-2020-6819: Use-after-free while running the nsDocShell destructor".

Well, that was fun. I clicked on the Notification in the "Side Bar". You'll never guess what happened.

I'll give you a minute.

Since there was no reply to my last message, I guess some people knew that particular "Update" was a crock. Another "Update" showed up again today. Since the previous "Update" (https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2020-11/) did absolutely NOTHING, I have to believe this Newest one is going to do the same, or WORSE. Have a nice laugh?

Hi kingofazzholes, Firefox 75.0 is a regularly scheduled release. You can read more about it here:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/75.0/releasenotes/

If you are not having good luck with automatic updates, you can download a full installer from the following page and it will update your installation:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

The previous (So-Called) "Update" didn't do a thing. I clicked on it and... Nothing. No Download, Upload, Side-load, or Upside download. I'm glad someone finds this funny. Thanks to whomever is writing these (So-Called) Updates, and the Latest Version of Firefox, when I open a New Tab, now I get a Blank Screen. I followed every Instruction I could find to fix it, and to the Letter. It doesn't change. You'd think, a Company would know how NOT to write Updates, and (So-Called) Better Versions of it's Products by now. Maybe they'll figure out how not to fix what isn't broken. It'll most likely take another five years to fix what wasn't broken.

Are you able to access any sites, for example, using the address bar or bookmarks, or are they always blank?

Are you able to access internal pages such as the Troubleshooting Information page? Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

The "New Tab" still opens to a "Blank" page in "Safe Mode". The Bookmarks Toolbar Works. When I click on any of the Icons ie "View history, Bookmarks, and more, Firefox account, Firefox home page, More tools, and Open menu are all still there, and functional. Safe Mode allows Ads on my email I decided to install the latest version of Firefox. I'm beginning to think (that) decision is the wrong one, as it's been installing for (Close to) one hour. I didn't do if from the untrusted Update received. I did it from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/download/thanks/. I went to https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/, but I didn't trust it. I didn't trust the one I went to, and see how far that got me... Hours of waiting for it to Install, and NOTHING.

I don't have chrome. I will not use the piece of digital garbage known as Google Chrome. It didn't work the first time they released it. They changed NOTHING when they released it again. From what I've read about it... It's still garbage. Update; It's now 11:17PM. Firefox Installer is STILL doing whatever. NO apparent progress from when I started it hours ago. Should it take hours and still not Install? 11:30PM. I just stopped it. In the history of Modern Installs, it shouldn't take three plus hours to install, and still do nothing. I may know what the problem is... My Xfinity High Speed Internet is too slow.

Hmm, did you download the full installer from the link I gave -- https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release ?

It sounds as though you might not have gone to the recommended link and instead downloaded the small "online" installer that needs to connect back to Mozilla servers for more files. That sometimes is blocked by firewall software. That is why I recommend using a full installer.

more options

No... Because like an idiot, I went to https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/. It opened https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release. A different address. I don't know about anyone else, but when I type in an address and it takes me to a different one... I don't trust it. I tried https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/download/thanks/, File version 18.5.0.0, Product version 18.05, size 312 KB Original filename 7zS.sfx.exe. and all I got was hours of nothing. At the very least, it took me to the right address. Still... It was a load of garbage. Now I'm going off of this "Safe Mode".

Sorry, I guess I should have explained that.

I always remove the locale code (en-US) for the forum's international audience. The server detects your current browser's language preference and redirects (similar to how this forum works).

The hash value on the URL (#product-desktop-release) is linked to the selection in the first drop-down. The page recognizes that you are accessing from a computer-based browser and sets that automatically.

I tried https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/download/thanks/, File version 18.5.0.0, Product version 18.05, size 312 KB Original filename 7zS.sfx.exe. and all I got was hours of nothing.

Yes, that is the "online" installer that doesn't work for some people. Try the full installer.

AND... Here we go AGAIN. I received ANOTHER "Little Pop-Up Window Firefox Update" when I opened Firefox. It went around my Setting to "Ask First", and I didn't catch it in time to stop it. Now Firefox "Stops Responding", Freezes, Take too long, or whatever you want to call it. How and why it got past my "Ask First" setting is unknown. I didn't change my "Settings".

Any difference in Firefox's Safe Mode? See earlier in the thread for how to test.
