Last week Adobe Flash stopped actuating/working with Firefox and there is no black box in the address bar or any place else that I see that asks me to activate it. I have it set as Always Activate on the Plug-Ins page but that isn't helping. I checked and have the most recent version. I had to go through several steps to activate it but it does work in Chrome. I run Win 7 and Firefox is my default browser. Please advise how I can get Flash to work again as it is hampering a lot of my activity on the web. Thank you.

Do you see the Shockwave Flash plugin listed in "about:addons -> Plugins" and on the about:plugins page?

Hello tek360,

If you haven't already, would you please go over this article :

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/keep-flash-up-to-date-and-troubleshoot-problems

According to your system details you seem to be using Firefox ESR version; any particular reason ?

more options

Yes, I read that but it doesn't solve my problem. I am on Win 7. Chrome does not have Flash built in but is also a plug-in that I have to click to activate and it runs with no problem. I have the up to date Flash plug-in installed in Firefox and have it set to Always Activate but it will not. I do not even get a box asking me to activate Flash. There is no black box in the address bar asking me to activate it either. This problem started last week. Until then everything was fine.

I am using the ESR version because there are some programs I run from time to time that require the Java plug In and I was advised several years ago by someone here that the ESR version is the only version that can run Java. If this information is incorrect and the regular version will now run Java please let me know. Otherwise I will stick with the ESR for now.

It seems that all the other parts of FF are working as they should and my system is fast even when I am running the Flash plug-in with Chrome. If there is a particular test you want me to carry out please let me know.

Thank you.

Thank you for the clarification.

Apparantly you haven't been needing Java lately, cause the ESR version ended support for Java in August 2018 ....

See : https://www.fxsitecompat.dev/en-CA/do.../plug-in-support-has-been-dropped-other-than-flash/

and : https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/9h4mud/firefox_esr_and_java/

So, would you please update to the latest version (for me since today : 69.0; for some others still 68.0.2) and see if that will change anything ?

That's strange because I recently updated and used Java this past week! Some internet sites where you clip coupons require it to run the coupon printer. I will update in a bit. I have a couple of things open now I need to complete before I update. I will get back here after the update. Thanks.

Could it be that in those cases you were using Internet Explorer ? That's the only browser that still supports Java (as far as I know .... ). You're not talking about "JavaScript" by any chance ? (In Firefox JavaScript is enabled by default)

Only Firefox 52.9.0 ESR will run the Java plugin as the last Firefox version.

Firefox 60 ESR (current is 60.9.0) and Firefox 68 ESR (current is 68.1.0) will only run the Shockwave Flash plugin.

Websites need to use Java Web Start (i.e. send a special XML file as application/x-java-jnlp-file) to launch a Java application in an external standalone window instead and can no longer use an applet to open a Java application embedded in a web page.

Yes, I know. The window pops up when needed. I was told to keep ESR because it allows the window to appear. I will go to the full version later and see what happens.

^ Note that Firefox 52.9.0 ESR is End Of Life

Also see the link I posted earlier :

https://www.fxsitecompat.dev/en-CA/do.../plug-in-support-has-been-dropped-other-than-flash/

Especially where it says :

"For enterprise users who require Java in particular, Firefox 52 Extended Support Release (ESR) will keep the plug-in support enabled until August 2018. "

I do not have Internet Explorer on here. Got rid of it ages ago. I use FF and rarely Chrome. I decided to try Chrome because I was having the difficulty with FF and when I saw Flash worked there I was surprised and then needed to post my question here.

Okay, migrated to V69 and it did not solve the problem. Something else is going bats here and I don't know what it is. I still get the ever-spinning daisy as the page tries to load but can't. Graphics also seem to load slowly at some other sites. I don't have the same issue when going through Chrome. I don't know enough to even hazard a guess.

The other thing I noticed is when I check the plug-ins it says "Ask to Activate" for Flash and when I opened the game page it never asked to activate Flash and there is nowhere I see to be able to activate it. That's probably why the game never loads.

Would you mind sharing a link to that page with us (and maybe to another page you're having problems with) ?

If a site uses Flash, it should ask to activate it.

Pages not loading : that's another problem, though. Would you please take a look at these articles and see if you can find an answer there :

In Firefox 63 and above, some file extensions are restricted and you can only download and save them, but you can't open them directly. There has been a pref (hidden from about:config) created to suppress this warning. You can create a new Boolean pref on the about:config page.

the url for the games page is this:

http://zone.msn.com/en/bejeweled/default.htm

the picture that shows the page that doesn't load is attached and the url is here:

zone.msn.com/gameplayer/gameplayer.aspx?game=bejeweled&instance=default

i will read your info about pages that don't load now. i actually thought it would open in another window but it didn't and i lost my first draft of this reply.

these files are not restricted. i have been using them forever until last week. at first i thought it was a MSN issue but I don't think so now.

In the ESR version Flash is set to "Always Activate". That option is not available here in the full version. No matter, it didn't work in either one.

I looked at the articles you shared. In the first one, most of the discussion is above my pay grade but I did empty cache and cookies. In the second one there is some site blocking going on for tracker cookies etc but even if I lift the block the site still will not play the game.

Thank you for the URL - I immediately tried it, and at first it wouldn't load for me either. Then I disabled my AdBlock Plus for that site and : yay  !

(by the way : apparantly the site doesn't use Flash)

Could an adblocker be the culprit for you too ?

As for those articles : you take all the time you need to go over them.

I don't use AdBlock Plus. I only have what FF blocks and what Duck Duck Go blocks. When I disabled the Duck Duck Go and FF blocks I got nowhere. I will try again.

When I remove the blocks that Duck Duck Go puts on the page I get ads loading but not the game. I also unblocked what FF blocks and then I get even more ads but no game. See picture.

I am baffled .....

'Don't even have to turn off Content Blocking on that site, just my adblocker.

Another strange thing I noticed in your screenshot : "Play in Edge" (?)

I'm hoping that someone else knows what's going on here, cause I don't
(so sorry .... )

Have you had a chance to go over those articles yet  ? Maybe they will shed some light on it.

more options

I looked at those articles but, as I said before, some of that stuff is way beyond my pay grade. I can look again later to see if anything there resonates meaning I can actually understand it. When I had WinXP I could do anything to tweak it. Here in Win7, unfortunately no because they hid a lot of stuff and I don't know where it is. Now I ordered a new machine due to the support for Win7 going away and it will have Win10 but I probably won't use Edge either. Maybe the webmaster for games will write me back and tell me what is going on. Maybe they did something last week to make it only work with Edge. Who knows. Whatever it is it is totally annoying because I enjoyed playing those stupid games for a break.

more options

I am just as puzzled as you are ....

I tried that site in both Firefox and Edge : works like a charm (after disabling my adblocker)

(I'm on Windows 10)

That "Play in Edge" in your screenshot - I wish I knew what that is about
(I don't get that when I use Firefox).

I sure hope that someone else will come to your rescue (fingers crossed).
