It took a bit of troubleshooting to isolate the cause of this. But apparently after my most recent Firefox update, when I click on the "Email Link" function, which I have in my overflow menu, the email itself does not pop up on top of the browser, instead it is hidden beneath it when it used to be on top.

I have done a couple of restores, tested all recent Windows updates, and upon a final restore and more or less disabling the Firefox updates, I believe the problem is with my most recent Firefox update. As long as I don't update, the email appears on top of the browser.

Short of disabling Firefox updates entirely, of which I wish i could do, I would accept responsibility for that, I can find no other workaround except to minimize the browser in order to address & send the email.

Thank you.

Hi springheel, userChrome.css files date back to very early days, but because there were powerful extensions that made it much easier to modify the toolbar area, it wasn't needed until Firefox 57. Anyway, that's behind us now.

The edit you need to make would be in your existing userChrome.css file, wherever you find a line starting with

@-moz-document url(chrome://browser/content/browser.xul) {

Change those to

@-moz-document url(chrome://browser/content/browser.xhtml) {

It's just a couple characters but means the difference between being applied and being ignored.

Hello jscher2000.

I wanted to tell you that last night I got a little tired & annoyed with Windows & Mozilla's on-screen prompts to update the browser, so I thought I would give it another try. Last night it seemed to work fine. however, this morning when I got online there was another update. Apparently a 69.0 build.

I read the notes. something about some new kind of monitoring for tracking. However, when I updated to the new build, the very same problem started happening again with the "Send email" function. Consequently, I did a restore, which would or should have put me back to yesterday's update.

however, after the restore, Firefox rendered as all black, or blank. it would not recognize my home page or any of the links on the New Tab page. The address's would not even appear in the address bar.

I was at a complete loss, and sort of migrating all my information to IE or Chrome, I did a second restore. I have the visuals on my browser back, but the Send Email link isn't working properly, again.

That said, I have to say the new build didn't fix my problem, in fact it made things worse. I am now going to restore it back to the build before the update that caused me the problem with the send link function.

But yes, the 69 build made the problem worse in that for some reason it wasn't rendering anything. Or did it seem to fix the other problem. And so I'm back where I started.

Thank you.

When you say you did "a restore" do you mean a Windows system restore? While there are many wonderful things about Windows, its ability to capture a working snapshot of Firefox data and program files isn't guaranteed; it's not even a design goal for that feature. So I suggest never using system restore if you can avoid it.

Yes, a Windows restore, and I fully understand how it's supped to work. However, it does work in the sense that it is restoring me to a point previous to the updates. Or at least it has so far. At any rate, the latest build doe not solve my problem. The black/blank screen threw me for a loop, I didn't expect that. It maybe that my system wasn't fully loaded.

Apparently, I cannot go back to the prior 68 build, or can I go back to 68.1 anymore either after having installed 69. So I guess I'm stuck with it rather I like it or not. And I can't say I'm exactly overjoyed.

Right now I cannot tell if the "Send Link" function will work as it did before or just be a randomized task.

That said, what I don't like about this build immediately, is that my search engines have reverted back to icon only, and I do not like that at all. This happened once before though I don't remember the build. But I went to a lot of trouble creating a User Chrome code to remedy that already, and now it appears the new build is ignoring that my previous User Chrome completely.

I'm sorry, but that is very discouraging.

That said, you would think it would be an option. Either icon & text, or text only. As simple as that. I shouldn't have to use User Chrome to remedy such a simple choice. User Chrome is not my forte that I should have to do it all over again.

Okay, well, let us know.

Interesting. Thank you.

Well that explains my UserChrome, but I don't really understand why they did it or how to get it working again. If at all. My "toolkit" was already set to true.

However, I think the Send Link may be fixed.

Please look at #2, the Code Edit part. In short, if you see something that looks like the line containing browser.xul, the .xul needs to be edited to .xhtml because the file named changed.

R saw that, and I understand that it changed the name of a file. But where is this file? And if I open it will it display html that I modify it but to what end? Will the browser then recognize User Chrome again?

It doesn't seem that long ago Mozilla rolled User Chrome out. I guess it was exactly a year ago. I sill have the mail with a link that I used to modify the search engines, and perhaps you were the one that gave it to me.
