Hello, In Windows Explorer, these folders appear under Mozilla. How can I tell which folder is what and are they all important to have and backup? Of course I know one of them saves your browser related activity. Even though the folders are a bit dated, the data in some are somewhat recent within past, say, year? Do I keep all?

If you open these folders they are have random file dates from a couple of years ago to today. I am running the layest version of FF Windows.

Thanks for your help! Steven

Hi StevenB, All of the folders in your Profile(s) are important. This article should help explain: Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data Backing up (or copying) your Profile(s) is a sensible action to take - It's Better To Have It And Not Need It Than Need It And Not Have It - Your Profile isn't very large - maybe 500 Mb - and a copy is usable, where a backup can only be restored. Profile that have a time stamp appended were created as the result of using the refresh feature in Firefox. Do you frequently have issues with your profile that you have refreshed Firefox regularly?

Firefox 67 and later can use a dedicated profile for each of the Firefox update channels and will lock the profile, so it can only be used by Firefox in a specific installation folder. For Release versions this profile would be a xxxxxxxx.default-release profile, profiles used in older Firefox versions usually used a xxxxxxxx.default profile (a refresh adds a time stamp).

This profile is a dedicated profile that you appear to have used only for a sort time (jwo9d93t.steven-1542522648120 seems to be current).

  • an7e6gbc.default-release last access: 7/9/19
  • gxzwoa4j.default-1487551603583-1514363307423 (created:Dec 27, 2017) (last access:10/10/18)
  • vny1cnqb.default-1539215170637 (created:Oct 10, 2018)(last access:10/11/18)
  • jwo9d93t.steven-1542522648120 (created:Nov 18, 2018)(last access:7/11/19l so you probably currently are using this profile)

If you no longer need personal data from the two oldest profiles (gxzwoa4j.default-1487551603583-1514363307423 and vny1cnqb.default-1539215170637) then you can use the Profile Manager to remove these profiles.

Best is to keep the an7e6gbc.default-release profile and possibly start using this profile because Firefox prefers it.

So much appreciate the detail a reply. So am I to assume that the folders that I posted here, are all profile folders, and not so much thecy program operating system files?

When I opened all of them they have certain files they go a couple years back and the contents don't seem to be the same from my view does a typical profile folder which I am familiar with. So basically I want to know are these all profile folders or each one is unique unto itself? Thank you very much for your reply.

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:preferences).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:preferences).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Thank you so much, you answered my basic question as to what the three folders are for (I know what the Profile Folder for bookmarks, settings etc.). Wasn't sure which the other two were for.

Thanks again! Steven
