In Preference when I select Open Messages in an existing window, it opens them in a new message window just as if that option was selected.

This changed automatically two updates ago after working fine for many years. To be clear, I just want to have the message open in the existing window and not open in new window. As it is now, a second window opens, and if I click Reply, yet a THIRD window opens. Thanks!

I'm on a Mac desktop running OS 10.12.6, and I have the same problem whether using the keyboard or the mouse. Thanks!
