I inadvertently deleted the preferences folder, browser.places, and now I have no Most Visited folder. The procedure offered for Firefox 62 does not work with my Firefox 64. I have created a new profile. I have deleted and reinstalled Firefox, but it is still missing.

The Most Visited folder is a so called smart folder. In previous Firefox versions (62 and older) you could reset a pref on the about:config page to make Firefox create new default smart folders. This is no longer possible and you need to create a new smart folder.

Create a new bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar and set name an location as stated below.

Name: Most Visited
Location: place:sort=8&maxResults=10

Close and restart Firefox to make the folder work as a smart folder.

Restore Bookmark Backups

Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Restore. From the list, pick the file you want and click it.

The backups are stored in a jsonlz4 file named something like this; bookmarks-2016-06-29_1424_enD1GTH ya0JmicnYWg4V4g==.jsonlz4

In this example; 2016-06-29 = date created, 1424 = number of entries.

what i need to restore is the Most Visited folder, not a particular bookmark. That folder does not appear in any of the folders that I can access/restore when I follow your suggestion. I think I need to restore a preferences folder, browser.places or the alternative for Firefox 64. Thanks. Roy
