The Quantum/Photon design went into testing in the Summer of 2017. Since that time, numerous style rule hacks and new add-ons have been posted to address issues of appearance and function. But it will never be exactly the same.

Each user's needs are different and Firefox is changing several times a year, so at this point I don't know whether you will be able to make Firefox 64 look the way you want it to look. To get individual advice, you need to be specific about what you miss in Firefox 64 vs. 56.

I realize you don't have a lot of bandwidth, but if you download the "Portable" version of Firefox 64, you can get a look at the interface, work with Customize, experiment with style rules, etc., in a single folder not touching your regular settings.

Microsoft is supporting Windows 7 for another 12-13 months, so I assume Firefox will also continue to support Windows 7 for at least that long.

Question (actually a couple) - What is a "portable" version? Is it meant for laptops or something? Sorry, I don't even text! ....Think stone age here. *lol*

2nd question is, I had that huge problem when an update wiped out literally "everything" from my existing version; history, bookmarks, settings.....it was a total, fresh install. Wasn't supposed to be. I know you cannot tell if I did something wrong, but what should I do to ensure that doesn't happen again? ...Or is it inevitable at this point?

Portable Firefox is a third party release that keeps everything within one single folder (unlike normal Firefox, which has stuff in numerous places on your hard drive). It was designed to be put on a USB "thumb" drive so you could carry your own customized Firefox around with you. But it also can be run out of a folder in your Downloads for testing.

Updates to regular Firefox should not wipe out your data. When there has been a long gap, Firefox may perform a Refresh, moving your old profile folder to the Desktop inside a folder named Old Firefox Data. The Refresh should carry over bookmarks, passwords, and some other data (see: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings) but sometimes it doesn't complete successfully, and then when Firefox starts up, some of that data may be missing.

As protection, you can back up your profile folder somewhere that Firefox won't touch. See: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
