This is the second time since FF60 that my favicons have been lost.

I lost them all in the upgrade from 60 to 60.01 - got them all back over the course of a month - now lost again after the upgrade from 61.01 to 61.02.

I went through every solution I could find on this site, all of the Mozillazine prescriptions as well, from running in safe mode to a new profile and everything in between.

I want to keep this from happening everytime there is an upgrade, more importantly, why does this persist?

This time it is somewhat different, in that many of them haven't come back even after visiting the sites multiple times.

Thanks, in advance.

I would think there is something corrupted. Microsoft Patch Tuesday today so please patch and reboot.

You should be doing this and keeping them current :

mine are from 1995

Again could be Sandboxie ?

Where did you get this from : Tab Mix WebExtension  ?

Disable anything to do with bookmarks and URL's

You did not reply to me post in the previous question : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 61.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Thanks.

Checked in with Sandboxie again, nobody is reporting a problem.

I am not having bookmark issues, just favicon issues - every bookmark, almost 4000 of them, are in tact going back to Netscape and Phoenix.

I have done everything mentioned in the process you conveyed, including a new install of Firefox. I found your solution, above, in my search before I posted.

I always download a full installer, I never just upgrade.

Not sure where to go next...

Great. You do know and practise good skills with Firefox. Am wondering if the total 4000 is getting to a limit. But last update stripped tags out so who knows.

Not much fun going to 4000 websites. Though it will tell you in the long run what sites you really do not need to have bookmarked any longer.

You can consider to delete favicons.sqlite in the profile folder to reset/remove all favicons. This will require to use (visit) each bookmark that you want to have its favicon shown.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

This maybe the factor with the push to HTTPS

https://www.simplehelp.net/2018/01/25/how-to-restore-favicons-to-the-firefox-bookmarks-toolbar/

Also the last update was Critical and was not scheduled so maybe hang in till next update to see if anything gets restored.

PK...

Thanks so much.

I have started the process of pruning the bookmarks, I deleted about 1000 today, it's a start, I also started visiting each one to render the favicon again, or try to render it again.

I did notice a pattern - certain sites - Tumblr for instance - keeping favicons is a hit or miss proposition.

That said, I believe the sites that are HTTPS have the favicons come back and usually stay, I did notice that condition.

I think you're on to something with your second posting, I seem to have observed that today - didn't before, but today definitely.

I will keep this email in my inbox, post again when the next update occurs.

In the meantime, a slog through each site, which is needed...

Again, thank you.

Far from any limit in Firefox. I don't know what the MAX is, but I have seen mention of issues with Sync when the user had in excess of 60,000 bookmarks - that's sixty thousand bookmarks.

Theo I have seen posted that a few users had a problem once, when going back a version with Fx58 or Fx59, but never a serial problem with updates. My guess is that Sandboxie might be involved.

As far as certain websites - you mentioned Tumblr and I have had a repetitive issue with Reddit - there has been an issue for over 10 years where one Favicon seems to get "transferred" from an adjacent bookmark and "taking over" the original saved Favicon. iirc, it started with Places in Firefox 3.0. I tried to track it down a long time ago and what I found was the type and server location of image that the website used (not the traditional favicon.ico file and not in the "root" directory of the website).

As far as your mention of Netscape and Phoenix, it wasn't until Firefox 0.8 or 0.9 (2004) that Firefox even saved the Favicon images beyond the current session. The image appeared in "Bookmarks" when it was used, but as soon as Firefox was closed the image disappeared.

The old bookmarks.html format used back then didn't store the Favicon images, until Mozilla modified the bookmarks.html file to store those images in base64 format. And that was a "hungry" format; roughly 50% of saved bookmarks and the file size of bookmarks.html would be ~10x as large as without any saved favicons. Like a 250Kb file going to over 2.5Mb. with only 50% of the bookmarks even having a saved Favicon. I know that because I was posting my bookmarks.html file to my personal website so I could use them from any browser, anywhere I was sitting; and I was stripping out the Favicons because when viewed as a webpage those images didn't appear. I even tried to have than appear as in Firefox on the "webpage" but couldn't achieve that goal. And the limit in those days was like 3000 saved bookmarks before Firefox would really slow down when rearranging bookmarks or importing them into a new installation

Ed,

Thanks for the reply...I appreciate your technical explanation, I just wanted to point out that I'm not a novice, just a frustrated FF user since Quantum.

BTW, Your theory about Sandboxie has been tested since FF60.xx.

Since that original issue a few months ago, I bookmark outside of sandboxed FF just to make sure.

I am not having issues bookmarking, nor issues with lost bookmarks - they are all there. Favicons don't render, new or old bookmarks, with minor exceptions like Amazon, Twitter or the National Weather Service, major sites.

But, it is hit or miss if they render again after I exit and reboot the next morning.

Yes, Tumblr is particularly frustrating, some render, some don't, but they all go away after I exit FF anyway.

I also noticed that the issue I posted both here and on Mozillazine about that bright red error message I kept getting about losing bookmarks, history et al because of security software when I run a second instance of Firefox is now gone, has since the upgrade to 61.02. It just went away.

I can go back to clicking a link in an email, as an example, FF will open in an un-sandbox instance of FF, all of my bookmarks, history, et al, are back again in the unsandboxed version, while the sandboxed version is running simultaneously.

Meaning, I can run 2 instances of Firefox, both of them mirror images of one another, one sandboxed, one un-sandboxed at the same time.

I always have been able to run 2 instances, have since I first installed Sandboxie.

This occurred between 60.01 and 61.02, not an issue anymore.

In the years of run-up to Quantum, I never had so many issues.

BTW, I found 17 instances of bookmark problems - not all related, but bookmark issues nonetheless - in the past 24 hours on this site.

I would say that the children running Firefox development now don't much care about things like Bookmarks - a lot of functionality for that matter - that is for old people.

As always, thank you for your assistance.

I can't delete any bookmarks, never had this issue before.

I am weary of this entire bookmark mess, I have no issues adding, now I can't delete even a single bookmark.

Favicons are completely gone, can't render a single one now.

I am at a loss.
