Hi, do you mean within the content area of the six web pages, there is an overlay that blocks access to the document? Are these pages all on the same site, or does this affect a lot of different sites?

One possible reason for blank in-page overlays is a partially effective ad blocker or other add-on. They have removed the annoying content from the overlay, but also the close button so then it's hard to get rid of. If you think that might be the issue, some ad blockers have a feature where you can click to remove unwanted items from the web page.

Another possible issue is something injected into the page by an add-on.

If you mean there is something blocking the entire Firefox window, not specific to a particular tab or page, hmm, I don't know what could cause that. If you quit Firefox and restart it, does it come back?

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option/alt key when starting Firefox. (On Windows, hold down the Shift key instead of the option/alt key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

You have described my problem - "blank in-page overlays is a partially effective ad blocker or other add-on. They have removed the annoying content from the overlay, but also the close button so then it's hard to get rid of." This appears in only the new tab. All overlays are over a Google webmail page, which partially shows on the left of screen. In new tab overlay, there is a faint gray Firefox icon in upper left corner. Only other item in overlay is a gear icon, in upper right corner. When I click, I get a "New Tab Preferences" drop down, with 5 checkbox preferences. I will be working through my 10 tabs and close Firefox to see if that solves the problem. Thx for the help.
