I recently encountered this app: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/view-image/ and upon prompting to install I am shown this confirmation box (Image 1).

What it says is: Add View Image? It requires your permission to:

- Access your data for sites in the google.com domain - Access your data for sites in the google.ac domain - Access your data for sites in the google.ad domain - Access your data in 193 other domains

Now, upon searching. I cannot anywhere find a list of those 193 domains. What the heck? You can't just blindly sell us an extension with no information on who or what is getting that "data". I thought you're supposed to be the good guys in this?

For information on add-ons, you need to contact its support. It should be listed on the page where you got the add-on.

In addition to the above :

Under 'More Information' you will see 'Support Email'.

Also, would you please take a look at this article :

Yes, I see:

"Access your data in # other domains Used in conjunction with the named domain message (above) when the extension is requesting access to five or more domains; the first three are listed and the other domain requests counted. "

Which is exactly what I am curious about. How can an extension request 193 other domains and I have no access to what those domains are?

Since Mozilla is painted as a privacy friendy place, I see two options. 1) They are dumb and don't give a shit, our privacy is just a marketing ploy. 2) They are taking money to keep those 193 sites ambiguous.

Mozilla does not develop these add-ons; merely hosts them, so users can benefit from them.

Mozilla does not make any money by hosting add-ons/extensions.

Like FredMcD suggested : Please, contact the add-on's developer - (see my earlier post as to how).

And : yes, I think Mozilla is very 'privacy friendly', but Firefox is not the only program we're using on the internet - e.g. we'll be using a search engine and many other programs.

But I do understand your concern, though.

It shouldn't be up to the addon's developer. Privacy isn't "let's pray the other guys deal with it". It should by default be REQUIRED to inform users of ALL websites that the data is provided to. Does mozilla care about my privacy, or is this privacy theatre?

It should be made impossible at software level to conceal ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY THREE domains that receive my data. It should be impossible to conceal one.

Somewhere, probably about 40 minutes from where I live, a bunch of lazy a**hats will say "oh nobody would care if it weren't for facebook"

No. I expected this from you from day one. This is why I switched from Chrome.

I went from Chrome, to Firefox which was slow as absolute garbage, under the sole guise of "being on our side", to something respectable which apparently is not on my side.

It should not be a marketing ploy. You should have actual people dedicated and invested in standing by the crap you say in your ninja-adverts. "Let them list more than 3 domains as ___ number with no info as to who" is what a lazy programmer with no regard for privacy does.

STOP BEING PROFITEERING SH**HEADS.

Those 193 domains do not have access to your personal data (like usernames, passwords, location etc..).

I've been trying to explain that Mozilla hosts these add-ons, so that you and other users can benefit from them. I'd like to think of it as an extra - free - service.

Mozilla / Firefox does not make any of your personal data accessible to others, but again : Firefox will not be the only program you're using on the internet, and I can't be sure about how 'privacy friendly' other programs are.

I really don't know what else to say - we, contributors, are (with the exception of administrators) volunteers, users just like you, who are trying to help other users in our spare time. We are not Mozilla employees .....

But maybe you'd like to submit feedback here :

I just now notice that, while I was typing my last post, you posted something that is - how shall I put it - 'not very nice'.

Apparantly I haven't been able to provide you with any satisfactory answers.

I'm sorry ......

And what I've been trying to argue is that Mozilla "hosting these add-ons" burdens them with the responsibility of creating such rules. The mere idea of a prompt that states "___ other domains" is something that was programmed, and written by mozilla. They did not provide developers free reign to create their own rules. Someone decided that it was okay to list __ other domains AFTER the first few are listed.

Yes, this does not provide them access to passwords, locations, etc, however, this does not state what websites they are. For all we know, one of them are pornhub or a political survey website. They might NOT be that, but we do not know as Mozilla has specifically written it as to not tell us.

It is both a matter of WHAT websites the addon is collecting data on (regardless of what the data is) and a matter of WHAT websites I am allowing it to collect data on. If Mozilla cares about privacy, The websites I "hit accept" to should not be left ambiguous. You should not assume that all of your users are virtue signalling privacy users, but people who actually care.

And, if you don't want to be referred to as a representative of Mozilla, you should not use things such as "we". I think, as a "Top 10 Contributor" you're about as representative of Mozilla as a NPO that somehow affords to HQ in Silicon Valley can get.

I'm sorry, but I don't recall using "we" when referring to Mozilla / Firefox.

Being called a "Top 10 Contributor" : It says absolutely nothing about the quality of one's posts, but merely about the quantity . And it's pretty obvious how you feel about the quality of my posts - well, I tried to put a smile back on your face and I failed miserably.

Again : I'm sorry .....

If you're sorry then forward it onto someone who gives a poop about UX.

I'm a user ...... and what I'm experiencing right now does not make me very happy (no pun intended).

I hope somebody else will give you more appropriate responses.

Have a nice day.

The extension is open source. If you go to its github page and see its source code you can see what the other 190+ other websites are. I don't know how to format it nicely, so I'll just copy them right here for you to inspect.
