I saved the credentials of sites with http-digest authentication, but Firefox does not enter automatically

The issue shows up with Firefox 58.0.2 running on Windows 7 and on FreeBSD 11.1 (in X11/OpenBox).

I am able to store the credentials of a number of http and https sites having access restrictions implemented by Digest Access Authentication as of RFC 2617. I verified that the credentials are correctly stored by Firefox. Nonetheless, when first accessing any of said sites after restarting Firefox, it does not simply enter the site, but shows the authentication dialog pre-filled with the respective credentials, and I need to press <RETURN> in order to actually enter the site.

I have to admit, that I only recently started to work with Firefox, and I cannot even tell if this is the expected behaviour for Windows users. Question, is this a bug or expected behaviour.

On the Mac, I cannot remember any Safari since v1 which presented me again and again the authentication dialog once the credentials were stored.
