Thundbird gets laggy after a while, then closing/restarting it fixes things. Is this common?

Basically, I tend to leave Thunderbird constantly open and I'm a heavy user of it. Over time, it begins to get laggy with changing between tabs, accounts, folders, pulling up an email address when you start typing it in, copy/pasting, etc. Eventually I get too frustrated with it and close it, then re-open it. After that, it's good for a while. Is this normal?

Some relevant info...

  • I just got a new computer. This issue was present on my previous computer, and is now creeping back in on this computer.
  • I ported over the profile from the old to new computer.
  • My profile folder is about 32GB.... too big?
  • The only add-on I have is "Email Address Crawler", although four more are disabled (not sure if that counts as "having" those add-ons) .
  • I haven't tried starting w/ add-ons disabled because this issue has been around from before I installed the Email Address Crawler.
  • I have 16 GB of ram and an i7 3.4Ghz quad core processor. I don't think it's my computer.
  • During lagginess, the task manager never reports super high CPU/RAM usage. It's pretty steady.

The fact that it feels better after restarting seems to indicate that some temp file(s) get overloaded and bog down the system. Is that possible?

Separately, is there any way this could be connected to having FF open (and under high usage) at the same time since they're both Mozilla products?

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
