Can I revert to the old Australis UI?
I'm a fan of the new update as far as the backend is concerned, but I don't like the new Photon UI. Previously the buttons and tabs were three-dimensional and used my existing Oxygen theme; now they are flat, (in my opinion) ugly and use an independent set of Firefox themes. I've searched for ways to change this and found guides on how to change the Firefox theme and rearrange UI elements, but nothing on how to change their actual style.
I'd also appreciate it if we could restore the padding in the bookmarks toolbar; it's sort of unpleasantly cramped.

I used to have the same problem. This one user changed that.(This way only works on windows) Press the windows key, then go to %appdata% then find firefox in the roaming after going to %appdata%. Click profiles after these other files you double click. Then, if your pc didn't install this one folder called "Chrome", then create that folder. Then right click and make a new note. Open it up, then save as "userChrome.css. After that, go to this website; [link removed by mod] Download this, and put this on the userChrome.css area. Hope this helps! -ARANDOMLOSER signing out.

This answer is not helpful because (1) I use Linux, (2) I do not use Chrome or have it installed, and (3) I am not inclined to download links from sketchy file-sharing websites.

Then I'm sorry. I was just trying to help you. I don't think that you can change the look for firefox then.

No you cant. But you can install Themes to restyle the User Interface as far a colors & background images, and you can use the Customize mode to make minor adjustments to the toolbar area.
It is also possible to to make changes that go beyond minor changes thru the Customize mode by using an optional userChrome.css file. https://www.userchrome.org/ That involves creating a chrome folder in the user Profile. chrome refers to the XUL interface which is created from the user interface files and code, as developed by Netscape back in 1994 / 1995. IMO, Google co-opted that term for their web browser that was created 10+ years later, long after Netscape made their browser code open source and created the Mozilla Foundation. No relationship to the Google Chrome web browser.

It is possible to override the "flat" appearance of Firefox 57, but there is no "turnkey" method - userChrome.css code is needed and you'll need to put it together element by element. I don't know if you've heard of Classic Theme Restorer, but it had a set of old-style buttons that harkened back to Firefox's early days. The author has posted some custom style rules that might apply them to Firefox 57; I haven't tried them myself.

An extension that accomplishes that may not be approved by Mozilla via the signing process for Extension type Add-ons. IMO, don't waste your time writing an extension. userChrome.css is easy enough once you find all the code,
