Hello. I am running FF 55.0.3 on Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit. Been using FF as my main browser for years. In the last 2 weeks, every tab started crashing, within 1-10 seconds of being open.

This problem only occurs when my Jabra Pro 9400 bluetooth headset is plugged into the USB port. Unplugged, FF works fine. If I plug the headset in while FF is open, usually it will crash the tabs. It is most often duplicatable on the youtube.com site.

about:crashes yields no results, as that list doesn't appear to track "tab" crashes, but only "browser" crashes.

I have no "Extensions" and 3 Plug-ins: OpenH264 Video Codec by Cisco Shockwave Flash 27.0 Widevine Content Decryption Module by Google

I know enough to know there is a conflict somewhere, but not enough to know how to identify/solve it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Firefox: Updated. Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Plugins: All set to automatically update, most recent, Aug 31, 2017 Windows: Automatically updates, most recently today. Internet Security Software: Windows Firewall/Defender updated Viruses/Spyware: no MalwareBytes did not detect any issues. Safe Mode: Crash still occurs in Safe Mode Check RAM: Not sure how to do this Report ID: there is no report ID, as about:crashes only logs browser crashes and not tab crashes.

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.
    Fx55Performance-disableHWA
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

If the problem is resolved, you should check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in these Knowledge base articles:

Thank you.

Try to disable multi-process tabs in Firefox. You can disable multi-process tabs in Firefox by setting the related prefs to false on the about:config page.

browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

http://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/22/multi-process-firefox/

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. At the top of the screen is a search bar.

HI Fred - Thanks for the replies so far! Here are the results:

FF v55 - I already had the Hardware Acceleration box unchecked.

I have the most recent versions of my graphics driver (Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000)

browser.tabs.remote.autostart was already set to false.

I set browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 to false - now i get a different crash message, this time it is "Firefox has stopped working; A problem cause the program to stop working correctly. etc" and "Close Program" is my only option.

This also does not cause a Report ID entry in my about:crashes.

This issue is also resolved by unplugging my USB Jabra Headset.

Any more thoughts?

Sorry for the delayed response, Fred. My headset is at work :)

I posted in two replies as the first paste was too many characters for the post. Hope this helps, thanks again!

Great! Let me know!

Phillipp - that looks promising, especially the discussion about the bluetooth speakers being a primary cause. This bug ONLY affects me when my bluetooth headset is plugged in via USB.

One note, since attempting these troubleshooting steps, I no longer am receiving the "Gah your tab crashed" message. I am getting a pop up: "Firefox has stopped working" "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

This still is not collected in the "about:crashes" report.

more options

if you are able to reproduce the problem in a new profile too, you could try to run the mozrgression tool from https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/ in order to narrow down the regression range of this problem which would be a great help to get this bug fixed... (there's a quick introduction with a video, but if you have any questions how to use the tool, please feel free to just ask here)

Phillipp - Starting a new profile seems to have fixed the issue - must be something corrupt in my current profile. Thanks for linking this, and thanks for all your help everyone!

    • Edit**

I spoke to soon. With the new profile I'm now back to "Gah this tab just crashed". I'll continue to look at your last suggestion.
