I want my master password to be requested only when I have to enter a password for the first time in the session, not at the beginning.

Are you using Sync?

When Sync is used then you need to enter the MP at startup to make it possible to connect to Sync (the Password Manager stores the Sync credentials).

There are also extensions that can force to ask the MP on startup.

Other possible causes are that you restore a page on startup with a login form and you have stored a password.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

The problem is actually Sync. How can I prevent synchronization from being done automatically at startup?

The manual Sync mode was removed awhile ago when Tab Sync was introduced. About all you can do now is to Disconnect that device from Sync before shutdown to keep that Master Password feature from asking for your MP every time Firefox is launched. I miss the "manual Sync button" which I had been using to help with launch time when Sync was looking for new data on Firefox launch, thus slowing down startup.
