Hi everyone,

Recently I was cleaning some malware/viruses/spyware/worms and all other nasty files located on hard drive of computer. Actually I still have them but this is NOT the purpose of my message. The problem is that I lost everything in Firefox. All my bookmarks that I cannot live without are gone. ALL. Each and every bookmark is gone. Saved passwords are gone. Addons are gone. Online banking certificate is gone. Also when I click CTRL T to add new tab in same window I get extremely annoying squares (3 lines and each line with 5 squares) which are graphically showing websites I have visited. Please if someone could help me to get everything back, particularly bookmarks are extremely important.

I tried to do three possible tasks but neither of them worked.

TASK ONE:

Usage of about:<wbr>profiles command in address bar but it is reporting error message saying The address isn't valid.

TASK TWO (consisting of multiple steps):

step 1: finding old firefox profiles I could manage to find. I hope they are NOT all otherwise I am in huge trouble. Hopefully something was overlooked and you will see why in upcoming steps.

step 2: clicking Open menu icon on the left hand side of firefox consisting of three horizontal lines and click Open Help Menu icon and then click Troubleshooting Information

step 3: clicking about:profiles in section Application Basics. Here I then added every single profile I am aware of via button Create A New Profile

step 4: for each of profile I got listed, I clicked on Launch profile in new browser and my bookmarks, together with other settings (online banking certificate, saved passwords, addons,...) were NOT ( !!! ) there. In neither of profile. I pray that I overlooked some saved profile...

TASK THREE:

Bookmarks menu\Show All Bookmarks\Import And Backup\Restore. However, In this submenu Restore there is nothing to be restored.

Someone please help me as I really need to get, particularly but not only bookmarks, back.

Waiting extremely anxiously for your reply...

Thank you in advance a billion times!

Delete that file as soon as you can. It has your private information.

In the folder; Profiles\qlgg77nz.default-1500678382414 you only have the Key3.db file. Not good.

Folder Profiles\tb7y8mdi.Default User2 has nothing.

Profiles\t4vp2qx6.default-1446832988670 has both the Key3.db and the logins.json files. With Firefox closed, Copy both to your current profile.

First, lets do this; You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Let’s do a full clean re-install; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

There can be several reasons you lost your data.

  • Your profile was removed/changed
  • The profile was refreshed, meaning it was reset
  • A new profile was created without the original data

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-run-firefox-when-profile-missing-inaccessible

Type about:profiles<enter> in the address bar. How many profiles are listed? How many should be there?

I doubt very much that installing (did you mean just install or uninstall PLUS install?) Firefox would bring back my settings, particularly but not only Bookmarks. I need them very urgently.

Yes I have Old Firefox Data folder on desktop. It is very annoying folder and hopefully I will be able to get rid of it as soon as settings are hopefully back. This folder has subfolder bookmarkbackups but it is empty. I doubt very much that the main folder (not subfolder) Old Firefox Data would be anyhow helpful because that folder appeared when I clicked on Refresh Firefox in Troubleshooting Information this morning. However everything (settings) was gone yesterday already when i cleaned, at least i hope i did, some malware. If you would be please willing to tell me what to do with Old Firefox Data folder, kindly let me know.

In about:profiles are four profiles. 3 of them arefrom today when I, in giant panic to save my life and not just firefox settings , tried to restore some old profiles. As I said neither of them, according to button Launch profile in new browser had bookmarks and other settings saved.

I am not sure how many should be there but since I was adding 3 out of 4 manually today I guess that the answer is: there should be just 1. I am the only user of computer if this tells you anything.

I wanted you to use the scanners in case there is still a problem.

By doing a clean reinstall; if there is corruption to the Firefox folder this method will clear it out.

Open the Old Firefox folder. What are the date(s) of the folders inside?

more options

if you are referring to the folder Old Firefox Data on desktop then unfortunately today's (22th July) and I repeat again: in this particular folder, the subfolder bookmarkbackups is empty.

See next reply first!

It's possible that a cleanup tool permanently deleted your profile (i.e., bypassing the Windows Recycle Bin), but it's always worth taking a peek in the Recycle Bin just in case. Some cleanup tools move files to a quarantine; please check the programs you ran to see what might be possible to restore.

Two side notes:

  • Tiles are normal on the new tab page. If you saw something else before, one of your extensions may have been replacing the page.
  • There's no <wbr> in about:profiles -- that's a leftover from a copy/paste; please ignore it.

Could you check for old copies of your profile folder in a restore point? The easiest way to do this is to use a third party utility:

Try browsing the most recent restore point before the problem started.

That button may not work yet. Try this method:

Scroll down to the profile you want to try and click the Set as default profile button below that profile, then scroll back up and click the Restart normally button.

more options

Nothing is in Recycle Bin.

On the following path:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

I see four folders. Unfortunately all of them are from today's date BUT fortunately in few (i believe three out of four) of those folders the subfolders bookmarkbackups are NOT empty and files inside include different date (fortunately older) than today's date or yesterday's date. However the reasons why I haven't been using any of those folders in:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

are (referring to the reasons) two:

1. as far as i know in most ideal way, they would restore for me what is the most important: bookmarks but other settings (squares/thumbnails to be removed as previously mentioned, addons, saved passwords, online banking certificate) wouldn't be restored. If I restoring bookmarks then this doesn't mean other settings would be restores too..

2. I have no idea which file and from which (out of 4) folder should I choose and what to do with it. On request I may provide DIR copy with foldernames, filenames of everything in Profiles.

more options

If you check each profile folder for these files, do the dates look like the right vintage?

passwords: logins.json Note: when copying password files among profiles, you also need the key3.db file, they're a matched set.

preferences including pinned/blocked new tab page tiles: prefs.js

Other interesting files: Recovering important data from an old profile

more options

I am not sure if I understood your question? If you are asking me if I have files logins.json and prefs.js then yes I have one logins.json file and multiple prefs.js files. However I have a feeling that this is not the answer you were asking?

I tried to make a dir > text file.txt inside command prompt to show you entire content of

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla

But its not working because AppData folder is set to system folder which cannot be recongized by command prompt. I don't know how else to make a DIR copy of entire folder: foldernames, filenames, dates of creation.

The urgency for me to get my old settings back is increasing but I don't know what to do with the folder Mozilla on said path. I don't think it would be helpful at all but first I need to know what to do with it.

more options

Seems like I am not able to edit previous message i did and want to add the following information too:

Since I am unable to do DIR list of foldernames and filenames on the following folder:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla

I decided to RAR the entire Mozilla folder on said link for purpose of reviewing the names of both files and folders. Hopefully after reviewing, you could have some suggestion what to use and particularly how to use it to get back my old settings: lost bookmarks, addons, passwords, online banking certificate etc.

FredMcD: I didn't keep Delete File Link from uploading website so I couldn't deleted it but fortunately I found a way to edit the post and deleted the downloading link. I copied both files you mentioned to the current profile while having firefox closed and restarted it. What should I do next? Everything is still gone. Please if you can tell me what else to do to get all the settings, particularly bookmarks back. My life depends on those bookmarks. Also I have no way to get saved passwords anywhere else :-(

jscher2000: If you didn't see+use the link I provided in my previous message then please let me know and I will either post it again (this time I will be more careful to keep Delete File Link until your confirmation that you downloaded the file) or send it to your email message if I get your email reply. As you can see according to FredMcD's start of reply, I had to delete the link I typed for you to protect myself from link being public too long. Please check my second-latest and third-latest messages (2 in a row) that I created for you.

Yes I will send to jscher2000 if he requests it and/or gives me email address and/or tells me to paste here. So what should I do now?

You can check the file date of the compatibility.ini file in each of the profiles. You can open compatibility.ini in a text editor (right-click: Open with) to see what Firefox version last used this profile.

Are all these profiles listed in the Profile Manager?

Thank you for your reply. Here is compatibility.ini report (only relevant line) for each of three profiles located on the following path:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Profile: qlgg77nz.default

LastVersion=54.0.1_20170628075643/20170628075643

Profile: t4vp2qx6.default

LastVersion=54.0.1_20170628075643/20170628075643

Profile: tb7y8mdi.Default

Everything is missing here. Inside this profile is strictly only one file: times.json

Regarding Profile Manager: I am unable to to access it. When I click OK (or Enter on keyboard) in Run window after typing EXACT command as said on the link you provided, I get Windows error message saying Windows cannot find firefox.exe. I don't have the option, inside Windows error message window, to look for firefox.exe manually.

more options

So all these profile were used by Firefox 54.0.1 (current release).

Did you check the file date of the files in each of the profiles to see which is the most recently used.

Do any of these folders have a bookmarkbackups folder folder with JSON backups and possibly logins.json and key3.db files?

You would have to provide the full path to the Firefox.exe program when Windows isn't able to locate the Firefox.exe file.

  • (32 bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P

You can use the about:profiles page inside Firefox to test different profiles. Find one you want to explore, click the button to make it the default, then use the restart normally button at the top of the page.

more options

When not all the profiles are registered in the profiles.ini file then you won't be able to use the Profile Manager to access these not listed profiles. If a profile doesn't show in the Profile Manager dialog then you would have to create a new profile and click the "Choose Folder" button and browse to this folder to register it in the Profile Manager.

Note that you should never use "Choose Folder" to specify a folder that already contains files that do not belong to Firefox (i.e. only use "Choose Folder" to recover an orphaned profile that isn't listed in the Profile Manager).
