3 days ago, a webpage came up from Firefox for browsing security or something. So I clicked on ok for the added protection. Now, I can't search anything, no matter who or what it is. I tried different search engines with same results. Each time I try to search something, I get a message unable to connect or unavailable. I can do everything else except search, I get the same result when clicking a link on someone or something. I can't remember the full message I get since I am at work. Couldn't find this site to ask my question at home. I found this doing a search here at work. So what do I do? If resetting Firefox is the answer, will I lose my bookmarks?

Well, decided to reset Firefox. Everything is normal and working as should now. Only drawbacks is my bookmarks gone, so start over again. Ah well

If you get a pop-up message asking to update Firefox or plugins or scanning for malware then such a message is likely a scam and you should never respond to such an alert to avoid getting infected with malware.
- Only update Firefox via "Help > About" or by downloading and installing Firefox from the Mozilla server and never via a pop-up or link on a web page.
- plugins should only be updated via the plugin itself or by visiting the home page of the plugin.
Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.
Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Now I am home, here is what I get each time I try to do a search.
"Unable to connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at www.trovi.com.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).
Is the problem still there?
While still in Safe Mode,
Download the scanners (above).
Thanks, I can now search everything again as long as I use the safe mode.
If the above doesn't help, You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

Thanks!
Are you all set then? Good.
These can't get your data back but will help in the future.
These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox
FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Thanks again, tried to copy and paste the bookmarks from old to new, but didn't work. Wasn't a big deal anyway, only had a few, the rest I still had on my yahoo bookmarks.
What do you mean with copy and paste bookmarks?
Note that you can only use the clipboard to copy an individual bookmarks selection and that you can't copy folder with their contents via the clipboard between Firefox instances.
ahh, ok. No matter, I got all the necessary bookmarks that I needed. he rest I don't use much, I can always go to yahoo to get them
