Firefox, almost crashing and/or crashing all the time

So basically I've been using Firefox for quite some time now, I have a load of bookmarks and I frequently have upwards of 50> tabs usually <100. I use an old OS - Vista.

I have found Firefox to be stable until recently, as it is really unstable. I am almost crashing a lot of the time. What I mean by almost crashing, is that the browser stop registering my clicks and the page(s) I am viewing go cloudy and the browser goes in a 'not responding mode'. However, it rarely actually closes Firefox and crashes properly to desktop. But I usually have to wait a good 10-30 seconds for it to respond and return to normal. Sadly, this happens often and it is quite common for a 'not responding' problem to be followed by another immediately after.

I have sometimes lost old 'restore sessions', so I may have edited a few things in my directory - but I don't see why that would affect the stability of the browser in this way.

Again, the problem is not that Firefox crashes full on to desktop; it's that it goes into a 'Not Responding Mode' more than frequently.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Rich

Sorry, I don't understand what I need to show you.

Do you want me to click on the numbers which I previously pasted?

Inside the report I see the ID and the Signature in the top left of the report? Is that what you want?

Thanks

Update your Flash Player Note: Windows users should download the active_x for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the active_x.

I did not downgrade. I only sent all of the most recent errors which didn't have BP. Is there a chance that Firefox rolled itself back to fix one of those errors?

Here's a translation [of sorts] of what Fred posted.

System Memory Use Percentage 88 Too many tabs open for the amount of RAM installed. And it doesn't help 'things' using an older OS.

atidxx32.dll = Advanced Micro Device Check for updates for the graphics / video drivers. If you have on-board graphics you may be limited by that old OS or the age of the motherboard. I had to build a new PC about 18 months ago to replace the Vista-era motherboard with on-board graphics I had been using for 8 years; drivers hadn't been updated in 6 years and just didn't work well with newer HTML5 websites & HTML5 video / audio.

Process Type plugin Shockwave Flash Version: 22.0.0.209 That is an outdated version of Flash. You should update to the latest Flash Version: 23.0.0.207 Although some of your crash reports that had Flash caused crashes pinpointed the outdated video drivers; per specific Bug reports. that Bugzilla correlated.

more options

Oh, almost forget.

Crash Reports use the "Processed Date" (the date they were submitted), not the date each crash actually occurred. When the user submits old Crash Reports on 11/26 that "confused things", making it appear that an older version of Firefox was being used as of 11/26.

more options

Thanks for the response.

Is it possible that my OS is just too old with the graphics card and hardware?

Aside from that:

1) My graphics card actually has the most up to date patch. The card is pretty old - AMD HD 5700, and no more patches have been released for it. It's not on board, though.

2) I do use a lot of tabs, as the crashes suggest, so the high RAM makes perfect sense. I have around 4gb or DDR3 in total.

3) When I ask Firefox if I can update any of my plugins like shockwave flash, it says there are no updates available.

That's because for my system Version 23.0.0.207 of flash is the most recent one.

more options

Sorry, I may have seen that Flash 22.0.0.209 in one of the old Crash Reports.

Based upon the information that you just provided about your hardware, about all I can think of is that you should make sure that Hardware Acceleration is turned off and see if that helps with the crashing. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration#w_turning-off-hardware-acceleration That and running with fewer open Tabs.

IMO, 4 GB of RAM should be enough with the 32-bit Firefox build which you have. Firefox won't need that much - my understanding is that Firefox 32 will only be able to access ~ 3GB of RAM, tops.

Beyond that, maybe the 64-bit Firefox build might work better, but on Vista and only having 4 GB of RAM that might be a "stretch".

more options

Thanks,

It's not really about crashes at the end of the day, though.

I have 70 tabs open right now, but even If I don't do anything at all, even move my mouse, Firefox will go in and out of 'not responding'

Quite annoying to be sure.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>

Is the problem still there?

Many times a 'not responding' condition can be the lead-up to a crash, especially when the computer is "sitting on the edge" going into 'not responding' repeatedly during a session. Sure, that is annoying but think of it as an indicator preceding a crash. Like slight upper arm pain and numbness of that area can be a pre-indicator of a forthcoming stroke event; using a medical simile.

Forgetting the crashes, how often is that PC running very low on RAM and maybe pegging the CPU without you even being aware of it, and not actually crashing?

If you minimize the Windows Task Manager a green CPU meter will stay in the System Tray and show the CPU usage, and give you a tooltip with the %. But of course opening the Task Manager is going to use a little bit of memory; on my Win7 PC the Task Manager uses 2930kb when open, so it may be slow to open when the CPU has a heavy load. When the CPU gets in the range of 85% you can get a 'not responding' condition as it tries to cope with more 'requests' than it can process.

On my Win 7, I use gadgets to keep an eye on everything.
