Have tried numerous so called fixes and uninstalls, to no avail.

One said the file lives @ C:\Users\Gary\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\.... etc. but I cannot find it and it never showed as being downloaded or installed from the beginning.

Hi, please try working through Remove “Safer Browser” hijacker (Virus Removal Guide) by Malware Tips - you may have to improvise slightly for Win10!

After removal you may need to reset your home page and search, which you can do by running the add-on SearchReset.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

That is where I started.

The program was never listed as being downloaded on the day it happened, yet I am still stuck w/ the "New Tab Search" page instead of the Mozilla home page ......

A likely culprit would be an extension. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

I have NO add-ons NOR extensions ...

If you right-click a blank area of the new tab page that you see, then choose View Page Info, what does that dialog show is the address of the page?

In case you are infected with a self-hiding extension, could you cross check the troubleshooting information page. Either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

The scroll down to Extensions and if anything is listed here, you can copy/paste the table into a reply. It will look a bit messy, but we're used to it.

Hmm, I can't help thinking the Maps extension is the most likely culprit. Can you disable or remove it? If the Extensions section of the Add-ons page isn't showing Maps, we might need to suggest a more drastic approach, but please check again:

Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable Maps and anything else you don't think will be useful.

Maps ( ie. MAPS - SaferBrowser ) has been removed from Extensions of Add-ons. I then restarted the computer, and refreshed Mozilla again.

FYI - The extra "new search tab" ( previously it was "SPORTS - SaferBrowser ) vanished earlier this am when I refreshed Mozilla. Then when I was searching for some driving directions, it reappeared.

So I guess I'm still unclear as to whether I'm clean ...

Why did you Refresh Firefox??

The fact that you keep getting reinfected strongly suggests external malware. If you haven't already, I suggest:

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help surface undisclosed/unnoticed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

I refreshed it because when I opened this morning, the option presented itself.

I refreshed the 2nd time because I thought your reply suggested it.

I have been in CONTROL PANEL - UNINSTALL PROGRAMS a dozen times of late. There is nothing fishy loaded, nor are either of the dates listed which correspond to when the problem first appeared or returned.

I have Malwarebytes previously loaded and it finds nothing. I have run any number of "free" programs only to find them wanting to sign me up for a year ...

Please define "take a considerable time to run" .

I will read the article ...

I do not suggest refreshing your Firefox; by restarting I meant exiting Firefox and starting it up again. If it's required to effective disable or remove an extension, Firefox provides a link above the extension for that.

At this point, if you see anything non-standard, please check the Add-ons page, Extensions list for something new and disable it. Unfortunately, when you Refresh, if you get reinfected, you need to repeat that.

It's rare but sometimes Firefox's program folder gets infected with an autoconfig file. To remove that, if that's the problem, you could do this:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

It only take a few minutes.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 47.0.1 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version even if you have a 64-bit Windows.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Using Windows Explorer/My Computer, rename the program folder as follows:

For 64-bit Windows:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

For 32-bit Windows:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

You told Scribe, in your 2nd posting, "That is where I started." with regards to the Malware Tips that he recommended. And you replied to jscher2000 that you have used MalwareBytes.

What about Adware Cleaner and HitMan Pro which were both suggested n that Malware Tips article?

Not every anti-malware tool looks for the exact same infections. Many times it takes multiple different programs to get rid of that garbage.

Also, when you look at "Install or change a program" it there anything in there you you don't specifically recall installing on purpose? Or anything that you don't recognize as using or that you need?

Some malicious programs "change names" to keep ahead of the anti-malware programs, to help avoid detection. So just because you don't see the "known name" as known by Malware Tips, doesn't mean a variant of that malicious program isn't installed.
