Firefox crashes when downloading a file and choosing "open with"
So every time I try to download a file and choose "open with" (instead of "save file"), the file opens and then Firefox crashes. It does this on any website, any file type. If I choose "Save File" instead, it downloads the file and there are no problems (it just adds the extra step of navigating to the folder where the file was downloaded to open it). I have completely uninstalled Firefox, deleted every trace of it from my PC (appdata, Program Files, registry, etc), and reinstalled. No change, still crashes every time I choose "Open with". This has been going on for at least a few months I think.

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
See if there are updates for your graphics drivers https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration
So I verified I was running the latest graphics driver. I also ran all the Malware scanners listed, and they didnt find anything. Any other ideas?

Yes I tried to install that and it told me I already have the latest graphics drivers installed.
Anyone have any further ideas here? I've done everything recommended above and the problem still exists. I've had to abandon FF until this gets resolved.

I'm sorry but I've got the same problem, but in my case, no crash reports are send. Can this be re-opened?
When I open .txt files from websites, Firefox completely crashes (closes totally) without any crash report. This is what happens. I click on the .txt file. The window asking if I want to open or download the .txt file opens. If I click downoad, all goes well, but Firefox crashes if I try to open it afterwards. If I select open file (notepad is selected as default reader) Firefox crashes instantly. It's Firefox 49.0.1 so the latest version.
This is what I've tried so far: 1.) The issue is not the website or how the website presents the file, because on the same websites, because I tried the same files on the same websites with Internet Explorer and with Chrome and those have no issues opening the .txt file. 2.) Starting Firefox in safe mode gives the same result. Firefox crashes on opening the .txt files. I can download them after opening in explorer but that is not what I want. 3.) I did the file association check. And .txt files are associated with Notepad, so that is correct too. 4.) I do have Malware Bytes running residently, but I also did a check, no harm found. ADWCleaner also did not find any bad stuff. 5.) I tried renaming/deleting the mimeTypes.rdf from the profile directory, but that also did not fix the issue. 6.) Latest graphic drivers are installed. 7.) Disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox, did not help either.
Now I now I can reset Firefox to defaults, but that takes a lot of work setting everything back to how it's now. Next to that I had the same issue about 2 or 3 months ago and did a reset of Firefox. I don't want to do a reset every 3 months, I want a fix or a more simple method to fix this problem.
Because this is the only issue Firefox is having right now, for the rest it's working perfectly. So if possible to fix it without having to reset Firefox I would be very glad.

Never mind. Maybe a registry setting was gone by using CCleaner.
I just downloaded Firefox 49.0.1 and via the setup file I installed it over the current one (it said upgrade anyway) and now I can open .txt files again.
Maybe somebody can use this as a solution too in the future.
