As of a few days ago, I can no longer drag tabs. I am using Windows 10, and have had no problems with Firefox before this. I don't remember making any changes to Firefox or Windows 10. I see that this has been an issue with Firefox over several years. I tried all the fixes suggested in existing problem reports. I have:

Disabled add-ons to make sure none were causing this -- did not fix. Copied my Profile and deleted the old one. Saved my passwords using Password Exporter, just to be sure. Un-installed Firefox (46.0.1).

Then, I freshly downloaded the Firefox 46.0.1 installer, and reinstalled Firefox. Immediately after I reinstalled Firefox, with its own freshly made profile (I'd delete the previous profile), I still could not drag tabs.

Do you have the ReminderFox extension installed?

  • issue with dragging tabs: ReminderFox "Foxy Alerts Slider"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Thank you, I just tried this.

Restarted in Safe Mode. No "Foxy Alerts Slider." No other extensions running.

Still cannot drag Firefox tabs in Safe Mode.

Try to open a new window to see if it works there. If that is the case then close the not working window.

Try to open a new window to see if it works there. If that is the case then close the not working window.

Unfortunately, the new window has the same tab dragging problem. A possible clue:

When I press and hold down the Bookmarks tab, I get a completely black area as the bottom half half of the bookmarks list. Releasing the button refreshes it completely.

Also, after I release the Bookmarks button, I just hover over the History tab and I get a completely black list, or a list with a few large pixels turned on, or a black list with just the history icons visible at the left. If I now move the hovering mouse pointer down, the list completely refreshes properly as soon as the hovering mouse reaches the top of the previously black list.

Suspecting a Windows 10 window refresh issue, I disable every one of the System Properties Custom check boxes. No change in Firefox tab problems.

Additionally, I am unable to drag a Show History item into a Show History folder, like I used to be able to.

Please note that I do not experience any of these problems in any other program, including the Microsoft Edge browser.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
