I might add that my last shut down was an abnormal shut down.

Others have reported the same. Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Yes. The problem is still there. It now shows a bookmark backup of today.

The strange thing is that when I first launched Firefox this morning it behaved as if it was a first-time install.

Sounds like a new profile was created.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

Do you know how many profiles should be on your system? Default is one.

If you haven't already tried shutting down Windows and starting it up again, please try that. Sometimes when Windows starts up, particularly after OS updates, Firefox is not given full permissions to your profile folder for some reason. Windows usually gets it right on the second try.

Fred - Yes I do have the Old Firefox on my desktop. I double clicked it to inspect the folder, 2x76pw1e.default, and it too is dated in 2014.

jscher2000- Good suggestion but it does not good. If I had done it immediately it may have helped.

You can use the links I posted to restore the old profile. If you need any help, just ask.

Fred - Even though the ...\bookmarkbackups folder contains only files dated 2014? Please see attached.

Is there only one profile present in the "AppData\Roaming" location used for profile folders?

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. Location used for the main profile in "AppData\Roaming".

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files in "AppData\Local".

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Looks like I have a folder with the most current file dated 5-5-2016. If this can be restored it will be very helpful. So do I follow the instructions in this link that you previously provided: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

Also, any way to also restore the tabs to the same date? I had several tabs open for reference to pending jobs. I do, however, have other options to get to the sites those tabs point to.

Follow the instructions given.

You can use the Profile Manager to recover a profile that is no longer registered in the profiles.ini file. The way to do that is use the Profile Manager to create a new profile and click the "Choose Folder" button in the second screen and browse to that lost profile.
