When I started up Firefox this morning all of my Speed Dial windows had disappeared and been replaced by empties - why?

INitially, instead of my Speed Dial windows, I got a "new Firefox" window. Clicking on the "+" button on the tab bar gave me a new window with 15 empty Speed Dial type boxes, two of which had links to videos - which didn't load anyway. I wanted my old 9 box Speed Dial back so I restored an old version. However, when Firefox starts now I just get the last site I was in before closing. Why has this very useful add-on been ratted up?
