I am having a problem on one computer related to bank login. Debian Stretch Iceweasle 38.1

I have cleared ~/.mozilla have no addons or extensions.

If I log on to the bank as normal, I get 'secure connection failed' In chromium I get the page was reset.

If I log in using a new private window it connects o.k.

I have a laptop with similar setup that does not have this problem.

I've renewed ca-certificates, and I can't think what else to change. It is not a Firefox problem as Chromium also fails but if you have any idea what else common could cause this I would be grateful.

a google search resulted with the private mode by somebody whith a problem in chrome and a comentor suggested incognito mode.

So I tried private window in Iceweasle and it worked. Did not try Chromium as I only installed it for this problem!

Many thanks for everything.

Do you know what version of Firefox your Iceweasel is based on? It sounds like the "ESR" release of Firefox, but may have some departures from default behaviors...

Perhaps the issue is caused by the site recognizing you from previously-set cookies?

You might use the Network Monitor (Developer menu) to watch for variations in redirects:

I would start by opening the Network Monitor in the lower part of the regular tab, then try to load the site in the tab and watch where the requests go and the stopping point. If nothing shows up, Firefox might be using the cache, and you can clear that using the steps in this article: How to clear the Firefox cache.

Then open a private window, open the Network Monitor in that tab, and try to load the site and watch where the requests go.

Any difference?

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Not cookies, because ~/.mozilla contains them and I deleted this directory as stated above. I did cache clear previously.

But I just deleted the whole ~/.cache/mozilla and ~/.mozilla and the problem has gone.

I wonder if a major firefox upgrade should clear this cache directory to prevent problems.

I've never noticed the network monitor before so thanks for that. It clears itself too quickly though to follow.

Many thanks for your help
