It was working fine until about 3 months ago. One day it worked fine & the next day it problem started. Then right in the middle of doing anything it just locks up & the screen goes black. Cannot even close it because there is no way to select close even after clicking the x in the right corner. The only way to get out of it is to turn my computer off & then restart it. And before you even bring up the add 0ns, I have turned them ALL off & even REMOVED completely EVERY add on & it still does the same thing. And there is no time frame on when it happens. It might be 5 minutes or it might be 7-8 or more hours. I have submitted probably 100 or more problems reports. Heard nothing, just a screwed up browser that keeps creating more work cause I loose everything I am working on & have to start all over again & God forbid I am on Facebook or Twitter or Google+ & looking a post &/or threads, because I loose my place & have to start all over trying to find the thread I was reading, if I can. Oh. And I have deleted & reinstalled Firefox at least 3 times. I am now looking for another browser to replace it. So I can get rid of the piece of junk.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

SafeMode-Fx35

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem. We have other test that can be carried out if no result

That is a problem with a plugin:

Firefox 38.0.1 Crash Report [@ npfirefoxtracker.dll@0x2d772 ]
plugin Nielsen FirefoxTracker Plug-in Version:1.0.0.0 Filename:npfirefoxtracker.dll

You will have to disable this plugin in Firefox and check the software that it belong to.

Totally removed it from my computer. Still locks up. As I stated before, I have removed ALL plug ins previously & it still locks up, so it is not a plug in causing the problem. If there are no plug ins installed, a plug in causing the problem.

more options

I went 1 step farther & removed EVERY plug in from Firefox. There are NO plug ins running or attached to Firefox. Guess what; STILL LOCKS UP!!!!! So much for the problem being with a plug in. Must be with Firefox, but no body will admit it. Time to get rid of it!!!

more options

The only way to "get rid" of a plugin is to remove its program.

I thought that is what I just said that I had removed ALL of the plug in from Firefox & my computer. Let me be more plain. I HAVE NOTHING RUNNING IN FIREFOX. It is totally bare. No difference that starting in safe node, in which by the way, it still locks up.

Do you have any recent crash reports available?

You can check if they have a different signature that doesn't include npfirefoxtracker.dll by clicking each link on the about:crashes page.

I very seldom get a crash report because FF just locks up & the only way to get out of it is to shut my computer down & restart it. The last I have is from 7/25/15 & it has already been sent.

Install AdBlock Plus, and NoScript. My settings for NoScript:

Options / General / [check] Reload the current tab only

Options / Embeddings / [un-check] Ask for confirmation before temporarily unblocking an object

Options / Notifications / [un-check] Show message about blocked scripts . . . always bounces in, distracting, not something I look at

Options / Notifications / [un-check] Place message at the bottom . . . have it at the top

Options / Notifications / [un-check] Display the release notes on updates

  • * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

NoScript toggles scripts on and off, as necessary. It can keep videos from auto-loading . . . https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/?src=hp-dl-mostpopular

If something on a page is not working, just temporarily disable NoScript, or disable Adblock Plus . . . You have to keep this in mind all of the time if you use these Add-ons.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the issue may be caused by the clear history settings. It was suppose to have been fixed in v30.

Type about:preferences#privacy <enter> in the address bar.

The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up in Windows. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/997866 {web link}
