I hose sat for a friend a while back. I left my PC running so room-mate could use it. Upon returning I could not access my chosen search engine (duckduckgo), I get this as the effort

"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at duckduckgo.com.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

In fact I cannot access ANY search engine....... However it works on my tablet so I know it still exists and I grilled my room-mate who denies using the pc or downloading anything..... (he is fairly pc ignorant so I kinda believe him).

So what settings could have suddenly come into place that block me from my chosen search engine? (FTR I cannot access search engines in IE either and I HATE IE so having to check there made me feel unclean). (I also checked with the anti virus and cannot see that it is blocking me but Kaspersky was shut down and still no search engines so I do not believe it is the issue).

I have tried for weeks to get access to my search engine and am so stumped I now go to you.

I cannot access search engines in either IE or Mozilla.

We are talking about two separate programs. The problem has to be on the computer.

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Have you tried accessing those sites from the address bar?

more options

Yup tried it..... thrice........ Is weird because won't let me live stream videos (like from tribute.ca or imdb.com either). If my room-mate knew anything bout pc's I would suspect he went to some site but nothing to indicate a virus or a malware.......

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

alrightie got each of the anti-malware....... nothing found so I am at least happy isn't a malware issue. Read that mozilla link and omg if it was any more useless North America woulda sunk into the Earth's Centre. Seems that most solutions offer "malware" or "you are a moron and don' t know what you are doing". I am ok with it being an issue of "I don't know hat I am doing" if it would only offer a way to fix it.

The only other thing that seems to be in play now is that windows offer of free windows 10 (gwx.exe). This shouldn't be the cause BUT it seems to always wanna run the stupid file.......

That I can help you;

Thank you very much bout the gwx fix.... With luck when I decide to get a new pc I will be able use duckduckgo again:) I am sure it is some stupid and simple thing and I just can't see the answer cause is so simple......

Did you re-install Firefox? That should have restored the search engines.

more options

Yup reinstalled it 3 times. Whatever the issue is I cannot access search engines in either IE or Mozilla. I thought maybe a malware but all the anti malwares found nothing. The page starts to load then gives the error message I posted before so something is blocking it from opening. And whatever it is is stopping me from live steaming movie previews on imdb and tribute.ca...... Normally I wouldn't care and would lump it but I wanted see the new batman v superman teaser yesterday and hada wait till I was at work lol

So when I started in safe mode and tried IE it told me check proxy server settings...... they were changed from "Auto" and that was the issue.

THANK you very much for all the assist I super appreciate!
