Cookies are being corrupted

more options

Greetings,

I visit a website every day. One of the features is a gallery of pictures. On a gallery display page, there are settings which control how the gallery is displayed. I can have them sorted by things when the pics were posted, filename, etc. I can also set how many pictures I want on a page.

I have been told that these display features are stored in cookies from the site.

The issue is that on the first page of the gallery, I set my display preferences which are sort by posted date, and 24 per page. I then refresh the page. Things work perfectly. Then I click next to go to the next page. After the new page is displayed, I find that the display settings have reverted to the default ones that I initially changed away from.

I opened FF Developed mode and looked at the cookie list. I used the inspector feature to find the cookie that was associated with the sort selection. There was one for per page (ppperpage). However, it looked like this:

ppperpage=a%3A7%3A%7Bi%3A0%3Bi%3A24%3Bi%3A1%3Bs%3A1%3A%22d%22%3Bi%3A2%3Bi%3A9999%3Bi%3A3%3Bs%3A3%3A%22des%22%3Bi%3A4%3Bi%3A0%3Bi%3A5%3BN%3Bi%3A6%3BN%3B%7D

None of the other cookies looks like this and that is why I am asking about cookie corruption.

If I delete the ppperpage cookie, and then use the set cookie to establish ppperpage 24, when I look at the cookie list everything looks OK. Now if I go from one page of the gallery to the next and look at the gallery display settings have reverted to the initial ones. And then if I look at the cookie list I see two ppperpage cookies, the one that I set and the one above has reappeared.

This is getting very bothersome and many others who use this gallery site are experiencing the same problem of losing the chosen settings as they advance to the next page of the gallery.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you associate the encoded cookie with a particular page or section of the site? Since I was using it logged out, I may not have visited the relevant page(s).

If I open Firefox's Web Console (Ctrl+Shift+k) and paste this on the bottom line after the >> and press Enter to run it, it seems to decode into something valid-looking, although I have no idea what it means:

decodeURIComponent("ppperpage=a%3A7%3A%7Bi%3A0%3Bi%3A24%3Bi%3A1%3Bs%3A1%3A%22d%22%3Bi%3A2%3Bi%3A9999%3Bi%3A3%3Bs%3A3%3A%22des%22%3Bi%3A4%3Bi%3A0%3Bi%3A5%3BN%3Bi%3A6%3BN%3B%7D");

Result:

ppperpage=a:7:{i:0;i:24;i:1;s:1:"d";i:2;i:9999;i:3;s:3:"des";i:4;i:0;i:5;N;i:6;N;}

Could you post a link to the site, or does it require an account?

What are your cookie settings?

Are you allowing all cookies or are you using the "Ask me ..." setting or are you using an extension to manage the cookies?

Private Browsing mode (never remember history) can also affect how cookies behave.

Whoops, this is not something I should view at work. Even on lunch. Ahem.

The cookies look normal to me (fully decoded) and work normally. Not sure why yours are malfunctioning.

Value was: a:7:{i:0;i:24;i:1;s:1:"d";i:2;i:9999;i:3;s:3:"asc";i:4;i:0;i:5;N;i:6;N;}

Hi,

No cookie manager in use. Set FF to accept all cookies from this site. Not using Private Browsing.

Any other ideas?

Hi,

Sorry about that I should have warned you. Working on the site is my hobby.

So you are having no problems similar to mine, and the crazy cookie was what showed up for you?

This is strange since there are around 200 people who are having the same issue and all are running FF.

That cookie still bothers me since it is so complicated vs the typical ones I see.

Any other ideas? TAI

No, I saw the cookie I posted (added by an edit) and it was not encoded.

Have you ever tested in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

You may need to clear the site cookies before testing. You can do that using the Page Info dialog While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove all of the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that make any difference?

Hi,

I tried that with no change in results.
