You want to edit the actual Firefox program files? For the most part the volunteers who answer questions here are not programmers and can't explain how you would do that.

MAJOR shame on you mozilla team. What were you thinking? definitely, not security and privacy....

This was a Stealth install When I was notified of update it said "security fixes", NOT "new features". pocket is NOT a security fix.

This should of been as a add-on. Many of us refuse to use cloud based storage for security and privacy reasons. Not to mention privacy contracts can be changed without our consent or knowledge.

I have used plenty of services that have redacted on their privacy protections. or violated their own protections and sold user meta data for profit. example netflix / user history.

I do NOT want ANY program "built into" my browser that has the ability to record what I look at. Right now it may take you "to press a button" but it would not take much to change the program to record without user knowledge or consent.

any kind of "recording feature" SHOULD NEVER BE BUILT INTO THE BROWSER ITSELF. It is a MAJOR security threat that can be exploited or hijacked at some point.

If you use this feature regularly or it is changed to record without your knowledge, a third party would be-able to build a distorted profile on you for the purpose of slander.(since it is stored in the cloud the end user has no true control of that information) Example an advocate against Fracking visits many sights that promotes non-violent civil disobedience (occupy sit downs) then stores it on pocket. The info could be used by third party to declare you as a terrorist and thus being a "terrorist" you loose all constitutional rights of due process. Then homeland sweeps in and disappears you.

This feature must be removed from the browser I REFUSE TO USE FIREFOX AS LONG AS IT REMAINS "BUILT INTO THE BROWSER" removing the ICON is NOT enough because the programing still remains.

This must be as an addon like downloadhelper. that allows the user to decide if they want to take the risk of using a "recording" related program in their browser.

You have good reasons for not using Pocket or other cloud-based services, but the Pocket connector code doesn't record what you do / where you go, and it can't save URLs to Pocket unless you create a Pocket account and set up Firefox to log into it. So I think you are getting alarmed unnecessarily.

The preferences you find in about:config are in other files where preferences are usually listed, and there probably are some UI bits elsewhere as well. You can search across the code for pocket using that site.

Hi tlaclair, here on the support site we can assist you with the Firefox available now, but as noted earlier in this thread, we can't make modifications to the program itself.

You can give input on changes to future versions of Firefox using this page:

This is only a few lines of code that currently point to the Pocket website that in principle could point to any website that is compatible with Pocket. If you set the prefs that currently point to the Pocket website to an empty string then you make it impossible to access the Pocket website.

There is one very easy way to change Firefox so that it uses no Pocket integration code.

Pocket is at present integrated into only en-US and a few other builds of Firefox. So download and install the en-GB build over the current one. (I assume you are using the usual en-USA build)

The en-GB build has some other differences but they are minor

• It defaults to Google searches, but that is easy to fix
  • Use the Search bar in Firefox and manage search engines
• The User Interface will have some British spellings, you will get a customise button for instance.
• You will need to install a USA language dictionary
  • e.g. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/united-states-english-spellche/

Use https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ and obtain an en-GB British version currently (https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-38.0.5-SSL&os=win&lang=en-GB) {assuming Windows OS as is the OP)

Once downloaded just run the installer. There is no need to try to uninstall the current build of Firefox just install over the top. In fact you should not use any third party installer, and you shouldnot remove the settings i.e. the Firefox Profile folder and files. (If you do remove the profile you will lose data and settings including bookmarks and passwords)

(I presume it is not necessary to remove the program files first. I see no reason to try what we tend to refer to as a clean install )

I found out how to solve this and other recent Firefox problems like Reader View, Hello, and all of that. As it turns out it, it is not at all difficult to move bookmarks and passwords to SeaMonkey. Problem solved!

You can use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify new (default) values.

Place a local-settings.js file in the defaults\pref folder where also the channel-prefs.js file is located to specify using mozilla.cfg.

These functions can be used in the mozilla.cfg file:
