Thunderbird deletes messages after failing to connect to server

Sometimes due to some slow internet connect or whatever reasons, my Thunderbird cannot connect to my Outlook server. Then, the bar collapses and all messages in the Inbox are gone. When he reconnects, he loads the messages from the server which takes him really long since that are a few. What can I do to fix the problem that Thunderbird is deleting my messages after failing to log-in?

What type of connection: - wireless? - dialup?

If not dialup, is this a laptop where you sometimes change networks?

I am changing a lot. It definitely occurs when I use WIFI. I think, when I've got dialup connection, it doesn't appear.
