Every email client I have ever used automatically found Word Perfect to open doc files. I think that Thunderbird did this initially. But now it sends me to Microsoft which offers to sell me Word.

Why does Thunderbird not find the default work processing program rather than demand Microsoft Word?

Or how can I tell it to do this?

At present I have to save the file to WP and then open it there. Hopeless.

Ok so this has nothing to do with Thunderbird. It is your computer that has dodgy settings.

Now go to the the control panel on the start menu Open the default programs applet and chose associate a file type or protocol with a program locate .doc file entry and correct it.

if you save the document to your desktop and double click it.... does word perfect open?

I don't quite now what you mean by 'save to desktop'. I am offered the option of 'save as..and I can use this to put the document on my Word Perfect list and, then, open it. But this is hopeless.

I should be able to, simply, click on the attachment and have T/bird find Word Perfect and use it to open the attachment. As I said, I have the impression that T/bird did this until recently. Eudora, my previous email p/g certainly did.

I looked for a way to tell T/bird to use WP to open attachments in vain.

it is simple. right click the attachment, select save as and choose your desktop as the location.

Now double click it.

I am trying to work out if it is your computer that is screwed up or your Thunderbird's settings. Unless your capable of saving a file to your desktop and double clicking on it I will never know. So will be unable to answer your question.

What is the file extension on these files?

more options

the files are .doc.

I saved the file to the desktop and double-clicked on it and got exactly the same Microsoft page as if I double clicked on the attachment:

I tried to include the screen print but it did not work. The screen says:

You are tryiing to use Office but don't have office.

It then offers to sell it to me.

Thanks. I agree that it is not Thunderbird problem.

I now have to find a way to have Windows 7 accept Word Perfect as a default program.

I just gave you instruction on how to fix it. If they are to complicated, re install word perfect and it will re establish it's file preferences and associations.
