Installed TB on this laptop using 8.0 opsys. All fine except using tools, import, settings, next, nothing happens. I've had her set up with a "ymail" account, and want to transfer it to T-B. addresses, boxes, everything. I've looked for help specifically, and hours later haven't found anything.

You have a 'ymail' account. You access the ymail webmail account via any browser. But you want the emails in the ymail account to download to Thunderbird. So, in the ymail webmail account, you then selected to use either POP or IMAP forwarding. What did you choose..POP or IMAP? All of this type of info can be found in yahoo help pages.

You downloaded Thunderbird. When you first ran Thunderbird, it created a default Profile. Then it should have prompted you to create a mail account.

Have you created the mail account in Thunderbird? If no, then create one. Menu Icon > New Message > Existing Mail account or File > New > Existing Mail account Enter name, email address and password (same password as used to access the ymail webmail account) Click on 'Continue' Thunderbird will try to configure settings.

Make sure settings are correct and that the correct type was selected. If all is correct, click on 'Done' to create the mail account.

What type did you create....POP or IMAP?

In Thunderbird, can you see the name of the account /email address in the left Folder Pane? If yes, then what happens if you click on 'Get Messages' ?

RE: Address Book If you have contacts stored in the webmail ymail account. Logon to webmail account and export the addresses.

Export the addresses. thunderbird will accept .csv files.

Then you can import the addresses. In Thunderbird Tools > Import Select : Address books and click on 'Next' Select: Text file (LDIF, .tab, .svc, .txt) and click on Next

You might need to map the column headers.

The only place I could figure out to export from Yahoo was to my Word-Pad. I now have three CSV copies saved in Word-Pad. When I go to import to Outlook, I cannot get it to go to Word-Pad. It gives me just a few options as to where I can go to seek it. I am totally frustrated. I have spent so much time on this I could have hand copied and entered it as new contacts.

When you choose to export the contacts, I advised that you used the comma separated.csv option. This would have downloaded as a .csv file and saved to eg: desktop or Downloads folder on computer. This downloaded ,csv file, if required, can be opened using eg: MS Excel. but you want to use it to import it into Thunderbird.

However, as you chose not to export as a .csv file, but instead chose to export using the option: Netscape/Thunderbird - Creates a text file designed for Thunderbird's import feature. You downloaded the contacts in a text file - that is still ok. This text file can be opened using Notepad or Wordpad. But you want to use that file to import the contacts.

re: When I go to import to Outlook, What are you talking about? Definately confused :) You are supposed to be importing into Thunderbird.

re: I cannot get it to go to Word-Pad. You are not looking for Wordpad, you are looking for the text file you downloaded. Wordpad is just a program you chose to use to open the file.

So make sure you have closed Wordpad and you are not viewing the file you downloaded.

In Thunderbird Tools > Import Select : 'Address books' and click on 'Next' Select: 'Text file (LDIF, .tab, .svc, .txt)' and click on Next

then locate and select the text file you downloaded and click on 'Open'

MY ANSWER: I mentioned that I now have 3 copies of exported Address, in csv format stored on this computer. To view them, I didn't explain correctly, I have been using word pad. That's why I called them word pad files. Sorry, my error. This time I tried again to import using TB; of course, I noticed that the system had a blank file name, and the extention LID or somesuch, and I wondered if that was the problem. So I clicked on it, and then it gave me the choice of calling CVS, and it brought up and showed the proper file name. I then clicked on next. The next thing was a message saying it successfully installed the address (content) to my contact list under Yahoo Contacts. Finally it looks like I have successfully transferred the Yahoo email addresses to TB. (I had checked all the boxes for the content I wanted to be installed) HOWEVER when I opened up the contact list, it was almost barren. Not a single email address showed up. Just peoples names and little else. I am dumfounded. I deleted everything and started all over again.

Rather than bother you any further, I am just going to call it quits with this import-export effort. I will have my wife look at the file of contacts on Yahoo, and manually enter them into the TB contact list under "personal contacts."

I want to thank you for your help, because I gained some insights as to the workings of this attempt to transfer information. Whenl my wife is finished with the manual transfer, I will clean up her laptop, and after she feels everything is satisfactorily cut over to TB I will wipe out any trace of Yahoo. I have been using Firefox and Thunderbird for years, and I am very satisfied with it. The only complaint I have is the slowness and lockups I get with TB when I go to delete files.

Thank you again,
