Get on firefox and go to a page like.... www.firefox.com. The page loads, then a second later it reloads ads laced in with the content and the plain background is a clickable link going to a third party site.

I have used malwarebytes, hitman pro, adwcleaner, tdsskiller, avast, deleted firefox, deleted all registry keys, and reinstalled it too.

I've probably tried a few more things too, but essentially I need help. PLEASE HELP!

1st get your pc formatted or add an antivirus like avg, kasperskey, norton etc. And thoroughly clean the pc. 2nd remove all plugins and addons then remove firefox and any other remaining files. 3rd reinstall it from the official site i.e mozilla.com. 4th do not add any unkown or non trusted addon. I believe this would surely help you. If still a probrem please be free to contact again.

1:Formatting the pc is the last resort when no fix can be issued. If it were practical to reformat the computer I would be doing that instead of spending time trying to fix the problem.

2:I have removed all plugins and addons, then uninstalled firefoxed and removed all lingering registry keys. Of course afterwards I scanned with 5+ antivirus programs and malware removers. Then I reinstalled firefox to come across the same problem. While we are at it I also made sure I didnt have any proxy viruses. Then I went to mozilla.org and downloaded firefox like I did in the beginning.

More background.-- Firefox on this computer is ran without any addons typically. We use it literally for one site having to do with a cloudbased ehr platform. So until this is resolved I installed one addon named "Blocksite" I have it setup to use whitelisting so I can solely load the one site we specifically need to use firefox to load. I can contain the problem and restrict it from being an issue, but I want it dead, not jailed.

Redoing the computer is a last resort, and a poor one at that. I have technical knowledge so any suggestions help, I have done alot of googling and I am just stuck on a solution to the problem.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

SafeMode-Fx35

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

You should check in Programs and Features for unfamiliar programs and uninstall them. Click the Start button, type Programs and Features, and click the top search result.

An excellent program that can check for unwanted apps is ShouldIRemoveIt. Malwarebytes and those other anti-malwares are automated and might not detect some viruses, but ShouldIRemoveIt determines whether you should remove a program based on ratings by users, how many times people have uninstalled the program after installing it, and results of virus scans on the program's files. Visit shouldiremoveit.com and download the application to scan for junk on your PC.

Tried running firefox in safe mode, its doing the same thing, I have verified before that the extensions are not the issue but good thought.

Checked out all the programs I have, I know what all oft hem are so no issues there, there were no recent installs before the problem started and the recent installs are all related to me trying to remove this virus.

There are some websites that use that in-text advertising technique, but if you see it on every site, it probably has an external cause.

Could you check whether Firefox has a non-standard connection setting? You can do that here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button

The default "Use system proxy settings" should piggyback on your Windows/IE "LAN" settings. But you can try "No proxy" to see whether that makes any difference.

I wasn't sure if I checked that before, but I tried it Shifted it to "Use system proxy settings" because it was on "No proxy" I got no different result based on either: (

Does the picture of your Add/Remove Programs window show every program that you have on your computer? If you have any adware programs on your computer that the anti-malware programs you downloaded don't detect or possibly a 3rd party proxy program, that could be the cause, too.

Could you check the possible sources of external content loading into pages as follows:

(1) Load my test page here: https://jeffersonscher.com/res/jstest.php

(2) Open the web console by pressing Ctrl+Shift+k (or you can use the Developer menu). This should present a range of tools in the bottom half of the tab. Click Network.

(3) Reload the page bypassing the cache by pressing Ctrl+Shift+r

Does anything appear in the list of loaded files other than my page and the image (see screen shot)? If so, where is it from? You can right-click > Copy URL to grab the address(es).

If you don't get ads in that page, maybe we can find another simple one to test. Unfortunately, most pages use tons of resources so it can be hard to sort out the alien ones.

Here is the first bit that loaded jscher2000 !!

Just-a-user -- YES, Every program on that screen is every program installed. I've looked through the registry too. This is always the same programs installed on this computer. So I can rule out most certainly that it is not an application on the "Add/Remove" list. Also, not an extension, or anything detectable by avast, avg, JRT, adwcleaner, malwarebytes or hitman pro.

A recent attack making the rounds appears to insert two configuration files into the Firefox program folder. Uninstalling the malware, not surprisingly, doesn't clear out those files. In case this one works the same way, I suggest:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean -- and do not contain alien code files. As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 37.0.1 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(2) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(3) Rename the program folder

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any difference?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Can you go to a page, right click it, click Inspect Element, then select the button that looks like a mouse pointer clicking a square and click on one of the text ads? Post what shows up in the Inspector box. That could give us an idea of whether the ad is from an add-on or a specific advertising agency.
