Just finished turning off Firefox's auto updates on all of my computers. Because I had to learn to get in the habit of copying my Firefox profile about once a month. Why? Because I keep losing my settings! Mainly my passwords. This is now the 3rd update in a row that has dropped my passwords. 2nd time on that computer. (Windows 8.1) .

Please figure out why this occurs. (I can't be the only one). If it was always the same computer, I would point at it. But, the other 2 are Windows 7.

OR................ maybe...........instead of the profile being updated and possibly losing files, or over writing them. At the start of the update, say it makes a backup? Just in case v. 36,37,38,39,40,41,42.................cause the same issue. At least then if the passwords are the only issue, grab the 2 files and drop them back in the profile. done.

I hate sounding like a douche, just really freakin annoyed.

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

I can understand the annoyance. In your past experiences with support when loosing data after an update, were there any add ons or sync services that also managed your passwords? Are there any config entries that you have changed from the default. In order to investigate a cause the troubleshooting information is helpful from about:support. I believe in WIndows 7 there is also a feature to right click on the profile folder and to "Restore to a previous version" to get these back.

Also based on: questions/1026966 "You can force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file and rebuild the logins.json file.

  • Reset the signon.importedFromSqlite pref on the about:config page to the default value via the right-click context menu
  • delete the logins.json file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed "

Note that the "Remember Password" extension has been reported to cause issues with the passwords disappearing, so if you have this extension then remove (uninstall) it.

Are only the passwords lost or is other data affected as well?

Are you still using that same profile or does Firefox create a new profile because of problems with the profiles.ini file?
