Is Firefox 33.x still "Chromefox"?

When FF29 was released, I discovered that Mozilla had basically just "cloned" Chrome and deleted/broke long-time FF features. So I (and I suspect many, many others) reverted back to the REAL Firefox, version 28. I was wondering if the major blunder(s) had been fixed in the versions following 29?

If you installed the Classic Theme Restorer extension, there is a CTR support thread over here - http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2827985&start=1530

I have CTR installed (to play with in an extra Profile), but I don't have a Mac to use to try to figure out what's wrong with your configuration of CTR or if that is a fault with CTR on the Mac platform. IMO, you're better off asking for help with CTR in a thread that is visited by the developer and other CTR users, some of whom may have a Mac.

Hello Romad I don't mine the new look, hey but that's me. Have you tried the guide Here?

Let me know if this helps :)

Nope, still the same.

Can you tell us what features you are missing in current releases?

There might be extensions to revert the change or otherwise do suggestions.

icepick & cor-el, I did try using that when the FF29 debacle happened but it didn't work so I went back to FF28 (THAT was a bitch!). Has the Classic Theme Restorer been fixed?

Oh, one add-on I remember there was a big uproar about FF29 breaking was ForecastFox. I see it hasn't been updated, so I guess it is still broken; has another vendor written a replacement that works with FF30 -33?

Bummer. Thanks the-edmeister

If you use extensions that place items or ornfo on the Add-on toolbar then you would have to install an extension like CTR to restore this toolbar or check its settings to see if you can move that data to another toolbar.

What were the problems with the CTR extension? There is a support thread on the mozillaZine forum site:

ForecastFox seems to keep working in Firefox 29-plus versions as long as a Statusbar or Add-on bar extension is installed, from what I have seen posted in various Firefox support fora. The issue seems to be with installing it for a new Firefox installation or with a new Profile. It kept working for me until I tried to install a new (supposedly) compatible / modified version of the original based upon what I read, to see if there was a "new" version I could recommend to users, "dead in the water". And foolishly I didn't backup that Profile before "messing with something that was working". My bad. But it's not as if that was a "necessary" extension for me; only had it to to help other users and out of curiosity due the high number of support postings from time to time over the years.

Also, there was a problem with the ForecastFox website, (iirc, back in October) where the domain registration lapsed and the online webpage for configuring ForecastFox wouldn't load for 2 or 3 weeks.

cor-el, I honestly can't remember exactly what didn't work back then; I just remember trying to get things to work again the way they did in FF28.

I won't ever ask for help over at Mozillazine again. I asked this same question there and was called a "troll"; one poster even faked quoted words that I had never said! My only response to those posts was a post telling them I'd found the answer over here.

I think I've figured out a possible way to try out FF33 without destroying my FF28 install. I'll try it later this week.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and courtesy to all of you here.

OK, I was able to install FF34 on a non-admin user account. I've been able to get it set-up similar to FF28 using your suggestions, but still have some issues. Attached are screenshots of the installs: FF28 on my user account is the left one, and FF34 on the Test account is the right one.

The problem I haven't been able to figure out is the window space above the location bar is missing and the close/shrink/re-size buttons are squashed down on top of the back/forward arrows. Any ideas on how to fix this? The tabs need a little work still, and I have to find a Forecastfox replacement, any suggestions for one?

Images fixed.

Both those images look exactly the same to me. Sure you attached the right ones?

Damn, you're right -let me look into this.

That is the Bookmarks Toolbar that doesn't seem to have the Bookmarks Toolbar items positioned on it.

Open the Customize window and set which toolbars and toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button to restore the default toolbar setup

No, the bookmarks bar is between the tabs and the location bar. I'm talking about the space above the location bar where the window title and the three window control buttons (red/yellow/green) go. I've annotated it in the FF28a shot below; compare it to the FF34a shot below.

Actually there are TWO threads over there, each of over 100 pages and together totaling almost 3,500 posts. However, I was treated very rudely when I asked my original question in Mozillazine and I don't know why I should go back there after such treatment. I'll think about it.

You asked a similar question but then later instead of responding to questions, you made this false claim that was essentially trolling From what I've read and heard, FF user base is dropping and the doom-and-gloom prognosticators say it is on its way to insignificance as happened to Netscape.

Then you made the claim here in this thread that somebody fake quoted you in mozillazine thread with words you did not post when that did not happen.

So no surprise if some people are annoyed with you there when you do this.

Not to mention calling Firefox as Chromefox does not go well with everybody.

James, I was just stating what I'd read from various places around the Internet, such as ZDNet. I also was trying to point out some of the reports were from what I call "doom-and-gloom" reporters, i.e. those who always seem to make only negative predictions. I was just trying to get answers. As for the "Chromefox" term, it was first used in posts either in these forums or the mozillazine ones (I don't recall where I saw it). I think it was an attempt to describe the changes in FF29 from what was FF28. I used it in that manner.

All I was trying to do was to find out if changes in the later versions of FF had been made to fix the concerns that had cropped up when FF29 was released. My question(s) here were answered by posters cor-el and the-edmeister succinctly and both provided further guidance.

Now may I ask you if I should ask my CTR question in one of the 100+ page threads over there or do you think a separate thread might be better? Did you look at the screen shots I posted above and do you have any ideas? From the posts I scanned in those CTR threads over in Mozillazine, they seem to be aimed more toward developers rather than normal users.

As tedious as it might be, IMO the thing to do is to read that MozillaZine thread thoroughly to see what other users have asked and the responses provided. I am fairly confident that most of your questions have been asked and answered already; chances they have come up repeatedly over the last year or so since that CTR extension was first made available.

I very specifically posted a link to page 103 of the latest CTR support thread, that starts in mid October, to get you to to the most recent postings = posters with the most recent versions of Firefox. Pay attention to the UserAgent displayed on the lower-right corner of each posting in MozillaZine fora postings - to make sure the "question" posting is from another Mac OSX user. The UI does vary a bit for Mac vs Linux vs Windows users (and WinXP users have different UI "theme" from Vista-up users). A "fix" on a Windows or Linux version of Firefox may not work on a Mac.

Thanks, the-edmeister, will do.

Second edit attempt.

I decided to run a search on the thread for OSX and it returned 46 posts, the most recent being on 28 Nov 14
