Hello,

Ever since the last upgrade was installed I have seen that the browser gets slower and slower but even on the first tab opened the performance is terrible. The symptoms are that pages load slowly, typing doesn't get displayed in the order typed, using aps like Ancestry in the photo section; using the select a face from a picture is very slow and jerky.

I would gladly give up what 'improvements' 92 provided just to get back to a version that works better.

I have disabled unused features, defragged the HD, and followed what was provided about slow FF and nothing has helped.

As a test I tried another browser on the same site and it was lightening fast. I prefer FF so that is not an option.

Any ideas on what I can do to get FF to operate better????

Thanks on advance for your help!!

Is this with all websites/pages, some, a few?

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Hi,

This happens on every site I visit. I am not blocking any content. I have tried all the troubleshooting things an nothing gets rid of this poor performance.

Maybe there is something else????

Thanks again!

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

Hi,

After using troubleshooting mode it looks like the problem was that the Use Hardware Acceleration box was checked. After unchecking and restarting things are much better.

I hope that this fixes everything so I will continue to monitor FF performance.

Thanks!!!!

Hello all,

Well the problem went away and now is back. I have checked and hardware acceleration is still turned off.

So now I am getting the same error message on every page I open at Ancestry.

This is getting very frustrating. It appears that when I click the X to close the Error message, the FF page goes to sleep for a while and is un-responsive. In some cases when I complete the action on that page and click the Done button. The page just sits there and does nothing when is typically would close and revert to the previous page. However, when I go to the original page, the action has been completed.

What should I try now?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This could be a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
  • you lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created

You may have to restore an older bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder via the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

You can create a new profile as a quick test to see if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
