Why is the Google maps display turning black?

I am running Firefox 46.0.1 on Win 10 on a DELL Inspiron 15 5000 series laptop.

A few days ago (no changes made to system) when I use Google maps, and do a search, maps display briefly, maybe for a second, or not even that, and then the map area turns solid black. Sometimes there is flickering.

Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it? (I have disabled hardware acceleration because I found a post online relating so a similar problem but on OS/MAC, but doing it did not solve the problem.)

Thank you in advance for any possible help.

JB
