I have been using Thunderbird email for numerous years.

At the end of June (2021) I started a summer-long vacation in another state, and prepared a laptop (Win 10) computer for the trip (with Thunderbird installed, of course.

Around July 5th I tried to peruse my email using Thunderbird on the laptop and was unsuccessful.... Zoho kept rejecting my email account password(s).... "login to server imap.zoho.com with username xxxx@xxxxx.com failed" (see attached)

I had the same issue with my account at gmail.com (Google mail) using Thunderbird. I have no other email accounts.

I assumed I had made some sort of mistake in the Thunderbird account settings on the laptop, but I had no way to compare the settings to my home computer (nobody there at my home and I was away on an extended trip)

Zoho was unable to assist me with Thunderbird. I assumed I did something wrong when I configured Thunderbird on the laptop and tried numerous parameter alterations without success.

I am able to access my email accounts at Zoho when I go to zoho.com directly, but compared to Thunderbird their interface is unwieldy and doesn't allow much screen space for email content (and, of course, I'm not able to save read emails to my Thunderbird local accounts).

I just returned from my extended trip and find that I now have the same issues on my home desktop computer, which was working fine when I left the last week of June. It (Thunderbird on my home desktop computer) also, rejects logins to my email accounts at Zoho and at Googlemail. Strangely, I can read new emails in the Thunderbird email accounts, but I am unable to reply to them or forward them.

The only logical explanation I can come up with is that an automatic update caused these issues. In fact, my home computer has a Thunderbird icon on the desktop that I'm not certain was there before (I keep most of my important program icons in program category folders on my desktop and in my quick-access bar at the bottom of my Win 10 desktop screen... so if an icon shows up on my desktop, I assume it is because of a product update). I am currently at Thunderbird 78.14.0 (64-bit).

I am trying to think of ways I can verify that an automatic update caused the issue.

I am able to log in to my email accounts by directly using zoho.com or google.com, but much prefer Thunderbird. I am hoping for suggestions as to why neither of my Thunderbird copies (desktop and laptop) are able to log in to receive email.

Thoughts and suggestions????

Note that when creating a brand new email in Thunderbird with the extra security step, it did NOT utilize OAuth. That is NOT what happens in the new security process.

If I re-create my existing email, will TB glitch? How do I migrate my existing POP folders to the "new" version of the account?

Anyone do this already? Any glitches? What's the easiest way to put your old account data into the new one?

How does TB handle the fact that you have two identical emails with separate accounts, differing only in that one-time password?

And how do you access that password entry popup that ONLY appears during account setup?

Been using Thunderbird for years. Love it. Recently updated my desktop to Windows 11. Ever since then it has froze on startup and is very slow to open messages and occasionally freezes especially when opening a message with attached images.

I'm running a 7th gen i5 which Microsoft says isn't supported but every other program I use on the system works normally. Its just Thunderbird that has "fallen over".

I'd hate to have to give up using it but it is becoming very frustrating to use. For example. On booting the computer this morning, Thunderbird sat locked for just under 3 minutes.

Anyone else experienced this?

Suddenly TB was not responding so I had to close it and restarted it. But all my tabs where gone... This has never happened before. And it's quite unfortunate, since the tabs is a kind of 'to do list' of mails I have to reply to etc. My version is Thunderbird 78.14.0 (64-bit) and my OS is Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS 64-bit. I have not closed TB again yet. So if there is some way to recall all those tabs please tell me!

Trouble sending email via app - getting SMTP error messages

I have an online AOL mail account via Verizon.net. When I try to send a new email via Thunderbird, I get an error message about my SMTP. Started happening around late 2020. I did not have to time to address the issue until now. I am able to receive my emails ok.

Incoming IMAP is entered as: IMAP.AOL.COM (works ok).

Original Outgoing STMP was entered as: SMTP.AOL.COM. But I also just today tried SMTP.VERIZON.NET (as documented in help notes) without any success.

I had version 78.2 to 78.14 (from Sept 2020 to Nov 2021) installed. Version 91.3 upgrade done Nov 2021 and now 91.3.2.

Tried disabling firewall without success.

I am using Windows 10 Pro (64), Windows firewall, Spectrum ISP,

I have c3.4GB of emails (20 years of work and community efforts, c.150k emails) that I can not lose (work related = employment/income, so not an option!)

have reinstalled multiple times following complete removal of all prefs and associated baggage - no joy created new profile, no joy

1. iNTRO - I spent an extra un-necessary year on the beta channel because of TBs Oauth2 set up problem. While there I had a major Tbird crash. Duplicates appearing , moving emails to other folders resulting in loss of said emails. incessant indexing, compacting and re-appearance of deleted contents of directories with unexpected loss of current contents. A real mess. After a month of this nonsense I only managed to recover by re-installing Beta to a new directory and copying backed up local folders manually, directory by directory, into the new Beta and checking (and or repairing) the contents, folder by folder. It took a day and a half. Arising from this experience and looking, sometimes aghast at the Beta Channe,l I suggest the following.

2. Suggestions 2 .1 Repair Tool We need to have a repair tool to rebuild a mail system just as I have partially described - you will know that there are many nuances in such a rebuild with some .sbd files not being recognised automatically and some others being recognised (trial and error methods were used to overcome these problems). In short you guys have the rule book and could easily programme a rebuild tool. What a relief it would be to know that such a rescue vehicle was at hand. 2.2 Back Up Tool As email data bases grow - mine is now 33 Gb - there has to be good back up system that users can trust. In the MS world (awful software) the back-up tools are not much good - so it would be useful for TB to do this or recommend some software for this purpose. I think TB guys should do this as Restore facilities are critical here - offering users options to recover particular email folders and emails and place them in particular locations would seem essential. 2.3 Archive

I have a lot of folders - but many are not  active at any one time. eg I have sent directories going back to 1997 eg Sent_1997, Sent_1998 etc . It would be useful to have a foreground / background arrangement of folders where folders in the background were semi-archived. They would be visible and accessible when required but not part of TB's routine search or maintenance .   They could be differently coloured in the LHS pane. It might take longer to access them. This might have the effect of preventing loss of active performance.

2.4 Deep Archive A deep archive where the user elects to compress(ZIP) folders in the Deep Archive. Once archived these would be ignored by the system unless they were released into the foreground /background area 2.5 Purge Command When things go wrong and the indexing screws up many duplicates are sometimes created. There should be a Purge folder command when right clicking on a folder.

There are other things such as better TB messaging and better documentation of the profile folder system - the existing information is too dispersed - and shoe-string - needs a User friendly approach not assuming one is familiar with shells. Do everything through DOS for consistency. Here too a tool would be useful.

This is probably a FAQ, although I can find no mention of the question using the search facility, so here goes...

I am just starting to use Thunderbird for my Usenet groups, having finally given up on Forte Agent. I don't seem to be able to find a way to define a filter to run across all subscribed groups - if I define it to operate on the news server (tweaknews) then it doesn't work on ANY of the groups. Surely I'm not expected to define the same filter for every single group, individually? What am I missing?

popstate files keep piling up

Popstate files (popstate-xx.dat) are piling up in my POP account. Each time the "xx" is a different number, i.e 13, 14, 15, etc. I read the suggestion fix to go to Help, Troubleshoot Information, click Open Folder button. I did so. There are two Open Folder buttons (Update Folder & Profile Folder). I picked Profile Folder. Then I closed TB as instructed. Then I clicked Mail folder, and it says to click the Pop mail account which is displaying those popstate folders. At this point I see two : one says "inbound.att.net" and one says :inbound.att-1.net". If I click the "inbound.att.net" there is only one popstate folder. If I click the "inbound.att-1.net" account there are many popstate folders. I think this may be the cause of the multiple popstate folders showing up in TB. I am thinking I could possibly delete the account with the "-1" and keep the account with the single popstate folder. BUT, will this somehow mess up my incoming and outgoing mail? I don't want to mess up. Can someone help me?

Hi, i'm using Thunderbird 91.3.2 (64-Bit) on Windows 10 and was quite happy up to last Monday (15.11.21). Since then i can't send Mails anymore. When i create a new Mail the send button is un-greyed as soon as i enter a valid reveicer address. But when i click on "Send", nothing happens. The mail-window stays open, no error message, no other reaction. To narrow down the arrow i deleted an SMTP server (not used anymore) and created a new one (server of a friend of mine, so i know for sure it's reachable and all data is correct). In the compose mail window i still see the old (deleted) SMPT server and the new one is not there. In the SMTP server setting window under "accounts" the list is correct (old one removed, new one is there). So somehow the server settings seem to not get refreshed or anything.

Receiving mail works without any problems. I'm not using a proxy, firewall or anything else that could mess with my connection, but i also think the problem is not with the connection.

Things i have tried already and that did not help: Run Thunderbird with Administrator rights. Try to update thunderbird (the "about" menu states that i have the most recent version). Restart in safe mode. Copy my profile folder and load that copy.

The only plugin i have installed is "provider for google calendar".

One more error I get, that might be related: When i reply to a mail the "send" button stays greyed out until i clear the whole receiver input field and enter a new addres (can be the same as the one i deleted immideatly before). After that the button is un-greyed but clicking on it has no effect, just as with a newly created mail.

Is that a known bug, what additional information should i provide and what can i do against it?

I'm using a german version of Thunderbird so please excuse if some of the buttons or menues are named differently than i tried to describe here.

I notice that others have in the past experienced the same problem, and I have tried a number of solutions presented, but none of them work in my case. I have made no changes to the settings, which worked prior to updating to ver. 91.

Your message was sent but a copy was not placed in your sent folder (Sent Mail) due to network or file access errors. You can retry or save the message locally to Local Folders/Sent Mail-xxxxxxx@gmail.com

Hello everyone,

I have been running into a display issue for a while now : the SMIME information regarding either signature or encryption is not displayed anywhere when reading a message (either in its own window, own tab or within the default view).

The weirdest parts are (cf images):

  • for PGP, no issues, either when receiving or sending
  • when creating the email, the SMIME signature / encryption logo is displayed as expected (at the bottom of the composition window)

I didn't find anything within the Error window (besides some issue happening with basically every email when switching from one to another in the main window) :

Technical details :

  • System : Archlinux
  • TB version : 91.3.2
  • Installed add-on : Owl Owl (tried to contact them but no answer yet)

In Windows 10, the upgrade from Thunderbird 91.1.0 to 91.1.1 fixed a couple of notification problems. However, the verion 91.1.1 brings with it a new problem - the number of 'new' emails shown in the badge is incorrect. TB actually shows (new emails) x (number of times server is checked since last download). Clearly someone has forgotten to reset a counter somewhere. I have TB server setting set to scan every 15 minutes. If I receive 1 new email but do not download for say 50 minutes, then TB will simply show that I have 3 new emails (=3 scans, 15 minutes apart) instead of 1.
