I am trying to create my outlook.com account in Thunderbird. I see the Account Hub box, and have typed in my email address. But when I type in the password, I get an error message, "Authentication failed. Please check the username and password". It then says, "Exchange auth error". I have checked and double- and triple-checked the spelling in the email address and password, and signed in to my email via the Microsoft outlook.com page using the same email and password. I can sign in to my email using the latter method, but Thunderbird keeps giving me the same error message and won't create the account in Thunderbird. What am I doing wrong?

Bonjour, j'utilise Thunderbird depuis plusieurs années et j'ai plusieurs comptes de messagerie. Je suis à la version 140.7.1esr. Depuis plusieurs jours, j'ai le message "Saisissez votre mot de passe pour alain.jouenne1@orange.fr". J'ai beau saisir le mot de passe, rien n'y fait. Ma config est Windows 10 64 bits, 3 adresses Gmail, 2 adresses Wanadoo et cette nouvelle adresse orange qui me pose problème. A noter, lorsque j'ai eu cette nouvelle adresse, je l'ai configuré dans Thunderbird et elle a fonctionné. Et puis, un jour, j'ai eu ce message. J'ai même modifié mon mot de passe de messagerie, mais cela n'a pas fonctionné. Pouvez-vous m'aider ? Merci d'avance

This is a new Fedora-42 desktop, upgraded (dnf upgrade) today. I installed Thunderbird today (dnf install thunderbird), after doing the operating system upgrade. I tried to add my yahoo e-mail account. Settings are as follows:

• create accounts in the new Account Hub is unchecked (off).
• accept cookies from sites is checked (on).
• remember password is checked (on).
• I'm using "IMAP".

When I click "Done", a separate window pops up in which yahoo asks for my password. After entering it, yahoo says "Something went wrong", and gives no other indication of what the problem is.

If I instead "Configure manually"... I tried both the default hostnames and "export.imap.mail.yahoo.com" for the outgoing server. I tried both "Normal Password" and "OAuth2" authentication methods.

In all the above cases, I get "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration , username or password." with a yellow background.

I see nothing of "Edge Too many requests" as was happening to several people recently.

How do I add my yahoo account to this new Thunderbird on Fedora-42?

Bonjour à tous et toutes, Je ne dois pas être le seul à demander ou redemander, cette question auquelle je ne trouve pas une seule solution éventuellement proposée, qui règle le souci Explication J'ai donc thunderbird avec 5 comptes de mails d'opérateurs différents dont, l'emmerdeur FREE En effet, en plus du logiciel, j'ai un vpn sur mon pc et mon mobile pour le travail et autres Si par malheur j'interroge mon mail free avec mon vpn actif soit sur pc ou sur le mobile, tout se passe correctement mais trés rapidement dans la nuit cet emmerdeur de free bloque mon mail, annule le mot de passe car il a détecté le MAL !!! et bloque toutAlors les ennuis commencent avec thunderbird Je m'arrache les cheveux, car à peine déclencher evidemment il interroge free et là !! bim !!! refusé ! et c'est le caca !! la fenêtre de connexion pour free, n'arrête pas de revenir bloquant tout, tout !! tant qu'il n'aura pas un bon m d passe ! et je ne veux pas supprimer le compte mail pour débloquer, car cela fou la merde avec tous mes dossiers de mails free enregistrés dans thunderbird , et c'est pénible de tout remettre et relancer et reconfigurer comme on le souhaite Je voudrais savoir pour les ingénieurs et leurs grandes antennes de thunderbird, ne font rien pour ce souci a priori réccurent et connu On m'a dit de décocher des cases pour essayer de "sauter" free mais aucune solution ne fonctionne C'est une vraie plaie à l'appréciation de ce logiciel. Alors svp une vraie réponse de pro claire façon tuto et fonctionnelle svp pitié !!

Hello, I'm new to Thunderbird, trying to connect my accounts for the first time. I've tried linking my new Posteo email, and I'm getting the same error message that it looks like many people are getting for various accounts (especially gmail) -- "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." It's the correct username (email address) and password, and I'm selecting IMAP, which is the recommended configuration in Posteo's own instructions for linking with Thunderbird. I can't find any trouble shooting info that's not for gmail. (I haven't tried to link my gmail yet).

I would appreciate any help with this matter. I was excited to use Thunderbird, and now I'm wondering if I need to find a different option.

I am setting up Thunderbird on a Win10 machine, and am having a lot of trouble adding accounts that I did not have on the two Win11 machines I have set the same accounts up on.

When adding my 2 GMail accounts, after clicking "Allow" on the OAuth popup the button would go grey the window would stay open and not close, and the account would not be added.

Changing the general.useragent.compatMode.firefox option to TRUE allowed me to progress and finally add those accounts.

I am now having the same trouble with my @hotmail.com account. When I add the account, the dark blue OAuth window pops up, but is completely empty, and there is nothing more I can do.

Things I have tried

• Reverting the above config change
• Checking that cookies and JavaScript are enabled
• Checking there is no saved password
• Used both the Account Hub and the default dialog, with the same effect.

(Login to server imap.videotron.ca with username (username....)failed) shows up continually and I don't know how to make it stop. It is stopping me from sending or opening emails. Can someone please give me a solution. I've just switched it to a new computer and I am getting the same messages on both computers. Thanks

I have Thunderbird 142-esr on a Windows 11 computer with two users in separate Windows users account. The second user (my wife) suddenly had her gmail login stop working on TB, even though it continued working on all other devices. The symptom was that the inbox would hang trying to log on to gmail, although no error messages appeared.

My account worked normally throughout this time.

After trying less destructive fixes such as closing the application, logging off, and restarting Windows, I guessed there was an issue with her account, possibly a corrupted file. So I deleted her gmail account. When I tried to create a new account, TB accepted her credentials and the Google login came up. I successfully authenticated to Google, but installation failed when I returned to the TB new account screen. After a long wait, TB issued an error message saying the password or user name was bad.

I did two tests to isolate the problem. First, I attempted to install my wife's gmail account in my Windows TB instance. That failed in the same way. Second, I attempted to install my gmail account on her Windows instance. That worked. I concluded there was nothing wrong with her instance of TB. I thought it might be an issue with her password, although Google has never asked her to change it, and there haven't been issues logging on outside of TB. Her password did not meet Google's current requirements, so I changed it to 12 characters, mixture of upper/lower case, numerals, and special characters. That worked.

Unfortunately, during the process, I lost her settings, and it took a while to recover them from backup media.

I'm posting this more to ask if others have experienced such a problem than as a request for help, as I think the underlying issue is now resolved. Because it may be some kind of malignant interaction between TB and gmail, I thought it might be worth reporting as well.

Thank you David for your reply yesterday; I don't think it will work on a Mac. Problems seldom come singly and I now find that i cant get into my wife's Thunderbird account on the new Mac Mini. But on the laptop I have no problems. Both accounts have the same addresses yet the email address on the new computer will not accept the password. Any thoughts anyone?

when I view the saved passwords, the saved logins window does not work properly. I cannot drag the borders left or right to view whole information such as passwords or provider. The borders just refuse to move. I therefore can only view partial information under any heading. Please help if possible. Thank you.

Sending of password for user (name) did not succeed. Mail server mail.skymesh.com.au responded: [AUTH] Authentication failed. this is the message I get and then no new mail comes, I can sign in to my skymesh account

Hey all, here's my conundrum:I have tbird on my phone, 12 different email addys all told. Imagine if you can my dismay at finding no passwords transferred using that quick transfer thing. Please tell me there is a way to fix this without having to manually re-enter every dang pass... Thanks

I stopped using Thunderbird in 2024 because of inability to change pw. I have same email accounts at comcast but would like to go back to Thunderbird. Currently using Comcast directly but loved TBird. I have a pw in use at comcast , how do I get Tbird to accept it for both email accounts on iphone and ios laptop?

After initial set up of an email to sign in to that email is impossible with the error message "Something went wrong" The only help is sign in from another device. This is not helpful at all!

This is particularly difficult when trying to set up an email on on an email programme such as Mozilla Thunderbird. Not but a few months ago this was never a problem as I have used this for years with Yahoo emails with absolute no problem.

This has all changed now (January 2026) making it impossible to set up an email by not being able to sign in to the account on the yahoo pop up screen.

This being tried on Linux and Microsoft windows on numerous browsers.

On one Windows computer in your pop up sign on window it just keeps saying turn on cookies in your browser but the cookies ARE TURNED ON? So it is just ridiculous.

Thunderbird won't let me login and doesn't deliver my emails. I have reset my password and still can't get my emails. How do I get some assistance on this issue?

I transferred Win 7 Thunderbird Profile (TB)to a Windows machine. It left behind all the other settings, such as when picking up/sending email, passwords are required at the IP to login, get email/send email.

QUESTION: Is there another TB area where the passwords are stored so I can copy those over to the new computer.

I posted this about a week ago, and when I come back, it's gone. That's why I am repeating myself.

A long timer ago, I was told by a user that Thunderbird does not need passwords. It does if you what to get your email. They are setting for each email user. There are 34 under the one TB.

I hope there is a transferable file because changing all the passwords and preference for each account would be the hard way.

I've tried everything in suggestions. Emptied saved passwords. removed and reinstalled. Server settings confirm "successfully established a secure connection....". new password isn't accepted. I DO NOT have 0Auth2 option in Authentication Method. What have I missed?

Hello there - I just changed my gmail password. I deleted the existing Thunderbird account for that gmail and created a new one. I accept the imap discovery and get the login error because it appears to be using my old gmail password. How do I get thunderbird to allow me to update the password to send for authentication? Thank you!!
