Help! Please :)

I just updated Firefox and privacy settings have changed. For the worse, seemingly.

Under Options for Privacy and Security there is a setting for "Send web sites a 'Do Not Track' signal". And, I am given only two choices: 1) Always 2) Only when Firefox is set to block known trackers.

I want a third option. "NEVER." These requests are optional; they are widely ignored; and they are -- in fact -- just another data point that is collected. "Never" has always been an option in Firefox. Why is it missing now?

Is there a setting in about:config I can change to ensure that "Do Not Track" is never sent?

Thanks! Kirk

Both Avast and Malwarebytes alert when I open a new webpage or navigate through a website. Both state that they have aborted a connection to mobiclean.xyz identifying it as adware. The identified file doing the redirecting is c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe. This is only a recent issue within the last few updates. I have scanned using both programs and they indicate that there isn't a threat (Avast both smart scan and full scan). Malwarebytes classifies the event as "RTP detection" and Avast classifies it as "Other:Malware-gen [Trj]. I am not sure if this is a false positive, some kind of Trojan, or the code in firefox.exe is being misidentified. Has anybody else experienced this? If so, what did you do? As of this writing I am scanning with Spybot Search and Destroy. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

OK guys, here is the question.

Lets say I installed some extension, it seemed harmless, did it job just fine. I tried functionality and then just removed extension from Firefox.

two questions here: 1) Is it possible that extension was spyware? (I suppose the answer is always "could be"). 2) Can it do any harm after you removed the extension even if it was malicious software?

Thanks for your help everyone.

Dear community,

Transferring my passwords from an old profile backup (v 49) to a profile in a newer version of Firefox (v 77.01). I'm copying across the logins.json and key4.db files like it says here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile#w_passwords. but it still doesn't seem to show my passwords in the new Firefox version when I look in the preferences. I did happen to notice that the key file version is named 'key3.db' in the old profile whereas the corresponding file in the new profile is 'key4.db'. I don't think they're compatible. My question is can I move my passwords from the old profile to the new profile in Firefox v 77.01? Please can you tell me if I can do it offline/locally like this? I don't want to do it with Firefox sync. I'm currently having problems signing into Firefox sync so that isn't an option.

Kind regards,

Matt

Firefox Autofill Frustration, Am I doing it wrong?

I love the AutoFill feature, with some exceptions. And I am hoping someone can offer a solution, even if it is to tell me I am doing it wrong.

It seems like others would have a similar problem, and it is sort of difficult to explain, although I'd think there would be a simple solution. Anyway, let me try to explain...

When I use the autofill option, it is usually while placing an order, or filling out my account details for whatever shopping site, or gaming profile, etc. But I have multiple addresses I need to consider when I am shopping, and need to send the order to one or the other, instead of my regular address. Like placing an order that I want sent to my mother's address.

As anyone knows, when you change something, like the address, state, zip or phone number, you end up with several autofill entries. Like this...

First Name, Last Name (My primary info, but I can't see it in the pop-up) First Name, Last Name (My primary info, but my work address, which I also don't see) First Name, Last NAME First Name, Last Name FIRST NAME, Last Name First Name, Last Name

These pop up, all valid options, the next time you start filling out a form. Which is great, because ONE of them is the one you would like to use, but there is no way to see WHICH one points to the one you need. The first one is my normal address, phone, etc, but the autofill pop up doesn't show you anything other than the name, the second is my work, but I can't see that it is... only the name. The third might be my mom's address, but again, I have no idea because only my name is shown...etc etc etc.

Is there a better autofill plugin out there, one that lets you label them? Or some way to show more than just the name? Just showing me the same name 12 times, without any way to know what the right one to use is, kinda makes the autofill feature useless for me. If I only had one phone, or one address, etc, the feature would work great. But since I have about a dozen addresses I routinely use, each with their own unique state or zipcode, or phone number, has rendered autofill useless unless I only need the common "top" one.

I hope I've made it clear what the problem is. And no, using a unique firefox profile for each is not the answer. I'd have to log out/off firefox and switch profiles several times in one shopping or gaming session, which would only make the solution highly annoying.

It would be nice to find a plugin, or any other solution, that would let me label, or differentiate each from the other when the autofill pop-up gives me the option to fill the form.

Like... Home - First Name, Last Name Work - First Name, Last Name Mom's - First Name, Last Name Gary's - First Name, Last Name

Anyone have a solution, or feel my pain? Or am I simply doing it wrong?

ANY help is greatly appreciated.

(I don't know why but my reply won't show up. So I'm posting the same thing here.)

So I made more research and made my question simpler. FYI I reseted my firefox and since then I've changed settings only via about:preferences and user.js.

Situation A:

(1) Set these preferences.

  • permissions.default.geo =2
  • network.cookie.lifetimePolicy =0
  • privacy.sanitize.sanitizeOnShutdown =true

(2) Go to https://www.jma.go.jp/jp/highresorad/index.html

  • You'll see a pop-up message that says "位置情報を取得できませんでした。".

(3) Check the box down below (今後このメッセージを表示しない。), and close that message. Then press f5.

  • You'll see that the pop-up message won't show up anymore.

(4) Open a new tab. Then close the previous tab. Revisit the site.

  • You'll see that the pop-up message doesn't show up.

(5) Close all Firefox windows. Then open Firefox and visit the site.

  • Expected: The cookies should have deleted. The pop-up message will show up.
  • Actual Result: The pop-up message doesn't show up.

(6) Do Ctrl-Shift-Delete. Then press F5.

  • You'll see the pop-up message shows up this time.

Situation B:

(1) Set these preferences.

  • permissions.default.geo =2
  • network.cookie.lifetimePolicy =2
  • privacy.sanitize.sanitizeOnShutdown =true

(2) Go to https://www.jma.go.jp/jp/highresorad/index.html

  • You'll see a pop-up message that says "位置情報を取得できませんでした。".

(3) Check the box down below (今後このメッセージを表示しない。), and close that message. Then press f5.

  • You'll see that the pop-up message won't show up anymore.

(4) Open a new tab. Then close the previous tab. Revisit the site.

  • Expected: You'll see that the pop-up message doesn't show up.
  • Actual Result: You'll see that the pop-up message does show up.

(5) Close all Firefox windows. Then open Firefox and visit the site.

  • You'll see that the pop-up message shows up.

(6) Do Ctrl-Shift-Delete. Then press F5.

  • You'll see the pop-up message shows up this time.

(Original post below.)

Hello.

(Sorry about messy English.)

(1) I set preferences as below.

   network.cookie.lifetimePolicy =0 (accept cookies normally)
privacy.clearOnShutdown.* =true (define what data is cleared when Firefox is closed)
privacy.sanitize.sanitizeOnShutdown =true (make Firefox clear the data when it's closed)

These settings should make Firefox clear all my cookies when closed. But Firefox kept some of it. Firefox cleared the login state, but some site data such as volume control on Nicovideo's video player were kept. That means when you login to the site and watch a video at 17% volume, then close Firefox without clicking the logout link, reopen the same page, you'll see yourself logged out, but when you login to the site, you'll see the volume is set to 17% on the video player, not default 100%.

(2) Now I changed one setting.

network.cookie.lifetimePolicy =2 (cookies are now for current session only)

This didn't work as intended either. Firefox sure cleared all the cookies, but it did in a weird way. The login states were working as intended. But some site data are not sheared between tabs. That means when you watch a video at 27% volume and close the tab, then revisit the same page, you'll see the volume on the video player is now set to the default 100%.

(3) And finally I found the one caused this.

dom.ipc.processCount =1 (Firefox must run on a single process)
   network.cookie.lifetimePolicy =2 (same)
   privacy.sanitize.sanitizeOnShutdown =true (same)

I honestly don't understand why this works, but this way everything seems to be working properly. All cookies are sheared between tabs and they are cleared when Firefox is closed.

My question is:

(a) Why did this happen? Especially the situation (1) makes no sense to me. Why Firefox left some cookies when I told it to clear the cookies on shutdown?

(b) Is there any way to share data between processes? I don't want my Firefox to be single-processed slow browser.

Thanks.
