As I logged on to Thunderbird this morning, I received a message about the program not being able to compact messages. Then I had a group of emails that either could not be opened or were composed of a lengthy email of letters and numbers that did not appear to be code. This occurred to a group of about 10 emails. The program is fine now. Anyway to restore these garbled or missing emails?

Until today, I was able to easily go to a name in the contacts sidebar by just typing the first letter of the name on my keyboard (not in the search contacts box). I am no longer able to do this. For example, if I was trying to find an email beginning with "br" -- I could type that and it would take me to the next entry in the contacts sidebar that began with "br" It kept me from having to scroll through the list all the way to the names beginning with "br" How do I get it to do this again?

I have been using Tbird for years and have never seen this issue. I have a client that when she sends an email, usually with PDF attachments, the email goes to the recipient but what gets placed in her sent folder is the header followed with random characters.

For example, this is what showed up in the sent email folder from a email sent with PDF attachment. This does not happen all the time but certainly happens enough for concern.

I have a situation which I just can't understand how/why it's happening, but moreso, resolve.

I have an email account setup on my server which uses a filter to catch all messages that start with a specific word (let's say beagle) followed by any number of characters (numbers or letters which are permissible using email naming restrictions (eg 123, XYZ, 12398760, Xyate1238127) followed by the domain name, let's say beaglebiggins.co.uk (so beagle123@beaglebiggins.co.uk, beagleXYZ@beaglebiggins.co.uk, beagle12398760@beaglebiggins.co.uk, beagleXyate1238127@beaglebiggins.co.uk etc) and forward them all to a single account, we will use beagle@beaglebiggins.co.uk.

Got it so far? Good!

Now when an individual sends an email, we'll say jackosmith@simpleton.org, to any of the aliases, let's take beagle123@beaglebiggins.co.uk, the email is received fine, by beagle@beaglebiggins.co.uk. So far, so good.

Now in Thunderbird, and I'm presuming only Thunderbird as it works fine on webmail and Outlook for Android, when you click reply or reply-all this happens:

To: beagle123@beaglebiggins.co.uk From: jackosmith@simpleton.org

See what's wrong? No? Then I'll enlighten you...

When you click reply or reply-all, it should say:

To: jackosmith@simpleton.org From: beagle@beaglebiggins.co.uk

... the to and from fields are the opposite to what they should be.

I've seen people mention adding identities, but when you have an infinite number of emails, this is simply not possible.

Could someone tell me a magic trick or suggest an add-on that can resolve this for me please?

When I try to open some old messages in my inbox, they no longer open correctly, but appear as computer code connected with emails from other messages. The same messages open correctly in my phone and in my backup Gmail inbox so are not lost, but I am concerned that my laptop may be infected, though a Norton 360 scan shows no issues. Can anyone explain what is going on and whether I should be worried?

Hi there,

Everytime I open an e-mail I get a blank page and I cannot see anything. I have uninstalled Thunderbird and re-installed it. I have disabled my anti-virus and anti-spam on thunderbird. There are no add-ons or anything in my thunderbird. I have no idea how to get rid of this. Anyone that can help?

I installed Nebula and when it installed all the emails in the From field now display as:

Name, abc.123@mymail

instead of simply Name (eg Jon Doerr) as it was before. This happens in all folders. See attached image.

I cannot find how to revert to the format I had, this makes it impossible for me to use TB .... thanks a lot!

I have been reminded by Microsoft that Thunderbird will be unable to access my Outlook account after Sept 16th. I have followed the instructions on the MS help site to re-configure Thunderbird, but when I try to change the Authentication on the outgoing server settings OAuth2 does not appear as an option. I've been using Thunderbird with no issues for years and I'd hate to lose it... Thanks Nigel

I am taking over a function from another person. We both use Thunderbird. He has all communication on this subject stored in a subfolder. Is there a way to transfer the subfolder to me? The alternative would be to Forward each of the messages to me but because of the number this is not a viable approach. We don't need to Share the subfolder, only transfer it.

On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Thunderbird was auto-updated on my computer. Shortly after that, I tried to start the tax preparation program I use for preparing tax returns for my clients. I am a CPA and tax preparer. The tax prep program is called "ATX" and is a product sold by Wolters-Klewer (aka CCH), and is unrelated to Thunderbird. I can no longer access my ATX tax prep program.

When I try, I get this message: "The program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close." I have tried multiple times, and get the same error message every time. I also get that message when I try to start ATX for previous tax years. I am sure it is the Thunderbird update that is causing this, as I have made no other changes to my computer, programs, hardware, or anything else. The ATX program worked just fine up until yesterday.

I badly need that ATX program. Please help ASAP. If someone wants to call me, my number is (775) 747-4666.

Finally, the error message I get when I try to start the ATX program has a link that says "Show details." When I click that, I get a long list of gobbledegook, but one line may be relevant here. It says: "Unable to connect to the remote server ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it "

I have over fifty tax return to prepare before the extended deadline of October 15th, so I desperately need to be able to open my tax prep program. I am almost certain the Thunderbird update caused this, so please help fix this right away. Thank you.

At first, the messages in the inbox were blank in the lower pane of the classic view in Thunderbird and when I clicked on them they were blank when they opened up. I tried the "Repair Folder" suggestion and ALL of my email messages in the inbox went away.

I don't know what I did but when I restarted my computer all of the messages started downloading into the inbox. I thought my problem was solved but now every received message has a long, drawn-out message of a bunch of letters and numbers before you get to the bottom of it to read the message (See screenshot below).

I have no idea what has caused this and I don't know how to get rid of them.

Any suggestions?

Windows 10 thunderbird 91.13.1 (I know ... out of date, but I tried a newer version last year and hated it.) My special address book sub categories don't work as they used to. I used to be able to right click on one of them and I got a choice to add all the entries in to a BCC field. This was great for forwarding things to a list of people with a common interest, but without sharing their addresses with all of the other recipients. It just quit doing this. If there is no easy solution, I guess I'll have to man up and upgrade! Many thanks for your volunteer work! Jack
