My old computer (PC-Windows 10) crashed hard (will not boot) when the transformer to our house blew out during a storm. I had installed and been running Thunderbird from an external hard drive. I have now plugged that into the new computer and can see all the program files and subfolders, including one call "Mail" in which I can see all of my custom named mail folders, I can even see the date last accessed/modified which all seem correct. When I run the Thunderbird application it seems to run fine, but opens with a "blank slate". There are no mail accounts or mail folders or anything. Is there a way for me to salvage all my existing/old messages? I can certainly 'create' all the mail accounts I use with existing addresses and passwords. But accessing all those messages is what I'm really hoping for. Also, as long as I'm asking, do you think I'll be able to recover my address book?

Fresh TBird Install, clean new profile folder. How to get old contacts and saved email?

I have been using TBird for at least 10 years. On occasions where I have installed it on new machines I have simply copied the whole profile folder from the old machine and pointed the new installation to it. Over the years, though the profile folder and prefs.js have gotten pretty junked up. One symptom is that I cannot add a second gmail account; the setup grumbles that the server name is already in use (or something like that). Other people have not had this problem.

Another symptom is just the junk in prefs.js (69kb), like: user_pref("mail.server.server6.hostname", "imap.gmail.com"); Server Six?!!?? This is probably left over from a failed attempt to add a second gmail account. I have only two email identites, one for my private domain and one at Gmail.

So ... what I would like to do is to set up a fresh installation, fresh profile folder, clean prefs.js, but then to move my existing contacts and stored emails into the new profile folder. TBird appears to be using SQLITE. Can I just copy the relevant database folders? If so, what are the files I need to move?

Recently I bought a new Mac, and used my external TimeMachine backup drive to put all my data on the new MacBook Air.

Since then, Firefox is having trouble with certain sites. On Patreon.com, most data won't load - I just get their swirling "wait" pattern forever. On Libsyn.com, the podcast description field for when I'm posting a new podcast episode fails to appear - the label "Description" is there, but no field.

Also, if I use Facebook Messenger, to talk to someone, inevitably about five minutes into the call, I'm told that there's a lot of noise on the call, or a lot of echo on my voice, or they can't hear me at all. For me, the connection is fine, but the other person experiences this. It's not a mic problem -- happens regardless of which mic I'm using, and other options like Skype don't do this, just Facebook.

Since all of these sites function fine in other browsers, I'm assuming something got slightly messed up in Firefox during the migration to the new Mac. What can I do to iron this out?

I have some old address books that I had individual "folders" for. abook-2.mab, abook-3.mab, etc. These files are 15 years old.

I saved them to a memory stick and copy and pasted them into my current e-mail profile on my new computer, but they won't show up in my address book.

What am I doing wrong, and how do I get them to work? Thanks.

I followed the instructions on migrating (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer) by copying the Thunderbird folder from XP to Win 10 Pro 64, and although the folder was big enough (2.66 G), when I open Thunderbird the account name appears, but there are no emails in it at all.

I'm moving over from Windows to Ubuntu at the moment and I have a problem. In Windows, there's two folders that contain all the Thunderbird profile and add-on data. In Windows, under the user's Roaming subfolder, lives all the data that's needed to migrate the accounts and email. That simply goes in the /home/user/.thunderbird directory on a Linux machine.

However, there's another Thunderbird folder in Windows that contains the add-ons I'm using to make my Google Calendar integration work. That's located in the user's Local subfolder. But I have no idea where to copy the contents of this folder into my Ubuntu PC.

Anyone know off-hand? Thanks in advance!

I have a dual boot Windows 7 -- Ubuntu Linux setup. I had my Thunderbird profile in a disk partition accessible from both systems and was able to use the same Thunderbird profile in both operating systems, including access to many messages stored in local folders. After the latest update to Thunderbird 68, I was forced to create a new profile in Linux when I wanted to start Thunderbird and the old local folders are of course not in that profile. Is it now no longer possible to share the same profile in the Windows and Linux installations?
