I've used Thunderbird for years. After the most recent update in late July 2020 (78.0.1), Thunderbird no longer works. It will not download new mail. It does connect to the IMAP server but then gets to "checking mail server capabilities" and hangs with the spinning circle indefinitely.

I have not done anything to Thunderbird, I just let it install the update. I did not install updates to any other program on my PC. I'm running Windows 10 on a laptop that is about 4 months old. Thunderbird worked absolutely fine before the 78 update.

I am not experiencing any connection issues or problems with any other running programs.

I have tried the following fixes already: 1. Checking my account configuration and confirming it is correct with my email provider. I have the correct ports listed and correct server names. 2. Changing the timeout setting from 100 to 2000. 3. I am able to access my email on my provider's Web interface so this isn't a password issue. There is no CAPTCHA required either. 4. I checked my anti-virus/anti-malware program (Kapersky). Thunderbird and Mozilla are both listed in the "allowed apps" list. I tried removing them both and re-adding, as well as searching for other variations of Mozilla/Thunderbird to add. I also tried Kapersky's "refresh" function. 5. I tried restarting my computer. 6. I tried rebooting my wireless Internet connection. 7. I tried using Thunderbird's "start in safe mode with apps disabled" function. 8. I tried re-installing 78. 9. I tried clearing caches and cleaning with CC Cleaner.

Nothing has worked. Something in the 78.0.1 update has messed things up. Thank you for looking into this.

Ever since Nov 3 and the last Thunderbird upgrade, I cannot get my emails through Thunderbird, although I can send them OK. I tried changing from POP to IMAP as I thought that might be the problem, but I still don't get the emails. My provider says "not my problem." What else can I try?

I have used Thunderbird for many many years. In recent years, as everyone uses electronic calendars, I have depended upon a linkage between the Outlook Calendar and Thunderbird. This has been through the Lightning add-on. With the updgrade to v78 this has stopped working. What do I do to reconnect these two critical tools?

At my age (83) change presents problems I find hard to fix. TB78 deleted both my address book and all custom colors. I had an address book that I built over a period of 15 years. I had custom colors for the main display page of new emails (which is not white). White is hard on my eyes and difficult to read from. Without getting fancy and technical (like importing from Becky interhet mail, never hard of it, or changing a profile (????) please help me to restore the missing stuff. Thank you, Shell

We are able to receive incoming emails on thunderbird, but we are unable to send emails. Each time we try to send an email, we receive an error message that connection to the SMTP server is timed out. We already checked internet connection, anti virus and still the error message persists. Pleas help as this email is really important.

I am having trouble logging into my bank's website from Firefox. It's worked fine for several years and I have no clue what triggered it all of a sudden. Furthermore, I can log in just fine from various other browsers.

I have Google around on the issue for awhile now, and have troubleshooted several different things based on what I've Googled, such as clearing all site cookies, data, cache, etc. Also I had a pop-up blocker add-on but I removed it and that didn't do anything. Lastly, I tried completely uninstalling Firefox and re-installing it without ANY add-ons, but it still doesn't work.

Details on what happens: I go to the log in page, and I put in my user and password and click to log in, and it does nothing. It just basically refreshes the page, so the page comes back up with blank user and password fields.

Any help/ideas on the matter would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi! For several days I've been unable to check notifications and click emoticons on FB. I just spoke with a tech who checked other browsers (Chrome, Safari) as well as my phone and I was able to do both with them all. But I still can't in Firefox. I've checked to make sure I'm updated, and I am. So she suggested I reach out to you. Should I try uninstalling Firefox and re-installing? I'm assuming I'll lose my history? Thank you!

I have had Firefox Nightly installed on my android device for years with no issues. About two months ago, I started to experience an issue where nightly would not load any sites at all while I had the AdGuard app running. I am able to browse social media/ YouTube with no connection issues at all. I am also able to load traffic while in Chrome for Android and Firefox Focus. The regular version of Firefox and Nightly are the ones that do not load unless I deactivate AdGuard. I have uninstalled and installed all browsers with their standard tracking protection settings and have not messed with any other settings at all. This is not an AdGuard issue since the traffic loads with no problems on other browsers other than the ones mentioned. This happens on multiple Android devices exactly as described.

Hi all -

Just upgraded to TB 78 on Windows 10 x64, Build 2004. Noticed two major things:

Issue 1 -

All of the mail folder icons are no longer yellow. Just a stark white with a black edge. I attached an Image of the issue for review.

Issue 2 -

My Message Composition Pane is dark with white letters and most incoming text mail is the same.

I do have some dark colors set up under PC Settings -> Personalization but everything was working perfectly prior to this new release.

I attached Images of the issue for review. Note the "dark haze" over the HTML email.

No add-ons are enabled!

Any help appreciated! Kind of urgent to me.

I was searching on Google how to block file:///C:/ or file:///D:/ because this is dangerous to allow!!! Shocking! And this is still not fixed after years of developments... Why? To keep this allowed makes it too easy for hackers, especially with multiple screens and a shadow/background screens available which can be running in the background, not seen, when hackers do that.. Kind of the way TeamViewer allows help to be provided remotely. Kind of screen sharing. Oh well...

Maybe need lots of complaints from you all to get this changed?..


Try yourselves to use file://C:/ with 2 // and file:///C:/ with 3 // and both are allowing access to the whole file system and any data file. BONKERS??? But why to use 3 /// if 2 // still works? Insider's job or programming conflict? Why would Firefox programmers allow that? I do not understand...

I tried to use selective website blocker, but for file:/// that addon says that the page is not supported... Maybe another type of addon could be developed for this to be blocked and secured once and for all, but not sure if Firefox would allow such an access or such a blocking. May cause issues with Downloads and accessing download folder from within Firefox. HOWEVER, they could block any system or file access from the ADDRESS BAR and SEARCH BAR and then do a work-around solution by developing a special warning 'dialog message' each time when any user (owner or remote user) tries to access forlder to see or use any file. That would be a lot like a guest account requiring password to access special folder or file, or wants to perform an action usually not allowed for a guest user. Password is required for that each time, or at leats a visual confirmation. That would help, I hope...

Would need to re-educate users after this! TOO DANGEROUS TO KEEP THIS IN SUCH A WAY AS IT IS NOW!!!!

DOES FIREFOX TEAM UNDERSTAND THIS? Maybe they forgot about this, maybe they did not figure out how to solve this, or maybe someone from an inside is helping hackers to have a very easy access? Not sure, but this "open doors to all system and data files for anyone" is shocking!


What about business or government people? What about online bullying and harrassment? What about privacy about which Firefox writes so much? Need more complaints to make this a serious issue. So, everyone, please write your own comments or complaints to Firefox and Chrome directly and maybe they will listen. This may take more work than we think, but my ideas may help. What about your ideas? Express them below and maybe they will help as well.


You all can ask them for this to be blocked or solved, so ask. Maybe my ideas will help to get this moving. Write your own to them as well. And Microsoft may need to get involved as well because Firefox, and from what I read, Chrome allows this too... Other browsers may be doing that as well...!!!!!! There are loads of various browsers available!!!! I read something about Windows Policies, but I do not understand what that is...


(( !!! )) If any of you will try any system changes in an attempt to try solving this issue, make sure you are okay to risk with crashed system requiring reinstall or recovery to be used, and then, write down all the changes you do in detail before carrying any further and applying them because that may ruin the system without a way to recover it.

This may be a repeated post. If so I'm sorry. I seem to have hit a wrong button and there was no acknowledgment that the question was posted. So I'm re-posting it.

My wife uses an HP desk top computer with Windows 10. She has used Thunderbird for email for three years. Suddenly on 11-17 she could not receive or send messages and received an error message that reads, "Sending of password for user edithg@bellsouth.net did not succeed. Mail server inbound.att.net responded server error. Please try again later."

I restored Windows system settings for 11-16 but she still receives the error message. She has tons of we-mail messages on Thunderbird that she does not want to lose, so uninstalling and reinstalling does not appear to be an option.

Do you have a suggestion?

Is it possible to have a version of Thunderbird WITHOUT the awful calendar and chat options, it was possible to uninstall them on earlier versions, but there doesn't seem to be an option to do so now. When I use Thunderbird I want an email client, I DO NOT want a Calendar or chat function. A step by step guide to disabling / removal would be much apprciated.

I have a bookmark on my bookmark toolbar, that when I open the bookmark has no highlighted star to allow me to choose to remove it. I open the entire bookmark list and it doesn't even show in the bookmarks list. How can I delete this off my bookmark toolbar? It's like it doesn't exist but it's front and center showing up. It does work and go to a valid web page. But I don't want it on the toolbar. And can't find a way to get rid of it. I've cleared cache, restarted, updated, etc. Nothing works.
