Yes, ever since the update to Firefox 29.0 the other day, I often get the "already running but not responding" message on trying to start the program, and thus have either to kill the service in task manager or reboot. I've already changed the properties of the profile to uncheck read only and already disabled an add-on (tab mix plus). My other add-ons are Better Privacy, AdBlock Plus, and Fire FTP, and darned if I am going to go without any of them. I can't help thinking there's just a serious bug in this new rollout. It's especially frustrating as I've used and supported Firefox and Thunderbird for so long now. I feel I'm being chased to Chrome! (I run Windows Vista, no firewall. The other suggested fix, deleting the lock file, is recommended, I see, only if the message persists after reboot, obviously not my issue.)

I'm happy to try, but I think it's time for me to get dirty. Or maybe for you to get dirty, but not throw the mud at me. You're evading responsibility.

(1) I can safely say I've seen no evidence of malware, none, not even a single symptom listed in the page you referenced. (2) I'm normally well protected by the usual software (anti-virus, spybot) but also by long-standing and I trust sophisticated habits, like not clicking on idiotic links. (3) Do you think it's a wild coincidence that the problem began the moment of my upgrade? (4) Do you think it's a wild coincidence that so many others are reporting this? Get real. You've ruined a Web classic program after all these years. Now fix it.

Satisfied? I downloaded, installed, and ran MalawareBytes. Clean, nothing detected. I told you that was a dead end and an evasion of the obvious.

Some mal-ware, and viruses hide that they are there. There are a few that are, for want of a better expression, Time Bombs. They wait for an event, and then start causing problems. Also Run several or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Yes, I daresay a very insidious malware, just able to avoid attracting attention by doing anything but screwing up Firefox 29.0 on lots of machines. But look, if I get the energy, I'll try still another scan. Meanwhile seems to me it's Mozilla's turn to expend some energy on a fix to what's clearly a buggy version.

All right, I also just ran TDSSKiller, and yesterday I ran my usual full-system scans with SpyBot and AVG Antivirus. No problems.

And, as I say, I normally have protections running, have painstaking personal habits going back at least 15 years, and have no reasonably fitting symptoms. None. Nada. Forget it.

Are you using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear any personal data when you close Firefox? If so, please change that as that can cause problems with Firefox still running in the background.

Interesting. I have it set to clear browsing history, searches, and cache (for obvious reasons of convenience and privacy), but not preferences, cookies, passwords, or offline data. Is that ok?

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the issue may be caused by the clear history settings.

Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Then Tools > Options > Privacy. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/997866?esab=a&s=&r=1&as=s {web link}

A bug is currently filed for this issue and it looks like it was fixed in Firefox 30 beta 8. According to one of the people working on the bug. This was posted today in the bug report

we believe that we have fixed it and the fix should be released as part of Firefox 30 beta 8, most likely on Wednesday or Thursday. If you can test it once it gets out, this would be great.

You can choose which option to try as this will be up to you to decide which route to take.

  1. A workaround is to set Firefox Privacy options to remember history, which is the default setting. (taking your privacy concerns into consideration)
  2. You could also try to download Firefox Beta to see if that fix is working then report in the bug of any issues you see. Here's the bug

If the first option doesn't suit you as you wish to keep your privacy, you might want to wait for Firefox Beta to reach beta 8 so you can test it out.

Frankly the idea of the clearing history as the issue is the first thing I've heard that makes any sense. It happens when FF closes and if all does not go well, it could cause the application to keep running. That item was undoubtedly reset when I did the full reset. Hope this works for everyone.
