I have about 16-18 tab groups (at least I did in FF28.0). When updating to FF29.0, FF crashed EVERY time when trying to load. I finally did a fresh reinstall of FF29.0. After reinstalling my 18 add-ons, I ran Session Manager and loaded a session from before I had updated to 29.0. It had all my tab groups! WOW, it loaded. Well, it loaded ONCE. It never loaded again. Crashes every time. I have saved sessionstore.bak and sessonstore.js at various times. I copied one from before the crashes and FF29.0 works just fine. It just won't work with all/any of my tab groups. Crashes every time while loading. If it won't work with my saved tab groups, I will be forced to go back to FF28.0. That would not be progress.

I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM!!! Turns out to be Bitdefender's Traffic Light Add-on (BTL). Well, sort of. BTL checks each NEW website against some master list of "bad" sites. It does this ONCE for each NEW site you go to. Apparently, it keeps a record of this so it doesn't need to recheck sites it has already cleared. I have about 160 websites saved in 16 tab groups. In Firefox 28.0, these sites were cleared when I first visited them. Now when I try to upgrade to FF 29.0, BTL attempts to RECHECK ALL 160 sites!!! This is happening while FF 29.0 is installing and must just overwhelm either the installation program or my computer so that the installation crashes! I noticed during installation my 4-core cpu monitor would be chirping along at about 30-40% cpu usage when all of a sudden all 4 cores would hit 100%. This would continue until the installation would crash (after about 10-15 seconds). So I finally tried a reinstall which would lose all my add-ons, but keep my tabs, bookmarks and tab groups. With NO add-ons installed, FF 29.0 was fine and all my tabs and tab groups were still there. The first add-on I installed was BTL. It popped open a new tab telling me that EACH tab website (all 160) was OK. So it opened over 160 tabs to tell me that each tabbed website was clean! This took a while. (But not as long as it took to close them!) So after closing all 160 tabs, I restart FF 29.0 and NO PROBLEMS! Opens right up and I still have access to all my tab groups. After 3 hours, I have successfully installed all 21 add-ons that I had before. YEAH!!! The short answer, I guess, is simply to uninstall BTL before upgrading FF 28.0 to 29.0. Then install BTL and wait until it finishes its checks to close all those tabs. Hope this helps somebody.

Can you give me your crash reports?

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and paste them into your response here.

Hi,

Some of your reports are not complete which means something is causing the reports to not be uploaded fully. Please follow the steps to ensure your crash reports can be uploaded and your crashes stop.

  1. Stop your antivirus and scanners temporarily
  2. Disable hardware acceleration. See Turn off HA

If that doesn't work then create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Which steps are specifically to ensure my crash reports can be uploaded?

The "bp" will prepend the crash signature.
