The address isn't valid problem when opening new tab
when opening firefox (i usually crash it to close under task-manager) it reloads all the tabs as it should. But when opening a new tab i get "The address isn't valid" i have tried all the option settings for start up blank homepage and last opened. i have tried all the suggestions in the other treads, reset..about:config i do wish there was a document giving detailed info for all those settings when in about:config and search newtab,,the only user setting(not defaut) is browser.newtabpage.storageVersion;1 and i have tried 0,1,2,3,4,5 no change even restarting in between. Have done re-intall, reset, safe mode, to no avail the tab operates normally after the error ,,i.e. i can start typing in address bar and even the auto complets works..i just restarted fz and it did an update to 27.0.1 that didnt fix it either.. i miss the fx default page that has recent thumbnails.

When you open a new blank tab (Ctrl+t) with browser.newtab.url set to the default of about:newtab, you get an error that the address is not valid?
If you manually type about:newtab in the address bar and press Enter, will it load?
By the way, why do you crash Firefox to end your sessions?

I have tried all combinations under the options/general start setting cntl-t ,,about:newtab,,have set the home page to various sites including default when clicking on live link in other apps like tbird opens fine I am running on an antique XP MSI/celeron pc after my w7 laptop died I try to keep the number of tabs under 7 because fx is such a mem hog only have 512k to work with and have assigned the page file to the fastest drive that i have and 20 gig dedicated. Even so the pc slows way down when fx takes up more than 300meg of page file. just because you close a tab doesnt mean fx releases the mem When i crash fx the page file usually drops from around 1gig to about 160meg depending on what else i am doing when i reopen fx the restore page come up and i reload the tabs i need , the page file is around 800meg, I even play with the priority settings depending on what i am doing

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

and does this also happen when you launch firefox in safemode once for testing purposes?
Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems
it has been a few days ,, but i believe so,, I think this all started after fx updated from 26 to 27
Does changing the newtaburl argument in about:config change at all if you put in any of these, let's just check the functionality: (3) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter the desired value:
(i) Page thumbnails (default)
about:newtab (no as you said)
(ii) Blank tab
about:blank
(iii) Built-in Firefox home page
about:home
(iv) Any other page
full URL to the page
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?
AH-HA by modifying browser.newtab.url was able to finally get it to go to about:blank and 2wire.com THEN CLOSING THE TAB I CHANGED IT IN but that change is NOT carried back to the options/general/startup settings.. nor is any change to the options/general/startup settings carried to about:config..is this an internal file to fx? would still like to know what the full url string to the fx page that puts up the thumbnails for recent I dont think this problem showed until the upgrade from 26 to 27
Hi smurfxyz, the home page and new tab page are independent settings. Usually the home page is used when you create a new window (Ctrl+n) and the new tab page is used when you create a new tab in an existing window (Ctrl+t).
With that in mind, could you clarify: the problem is with your home page setting only?
Hi smurfxyz, the internal address of the new tab page is about:newtab. In my original reply I asked what happened if you typed about:newtab in the address bar and pressed Enter. I can't tell from your response whether you tried that.
Some users have become accustomed to use an extension that creates a similar display and has a name such as Speed Dial or Fast Dial (there are many of these). If you previously had tiles on your home page in a new window, perhaps you were using an extension before?
by modifying browser.newtab.url was able to finally get it to go to about:blank and www.2wire.com works to
that change is NOT carried back to the options/general/startup settings.. nor is any change to the options/general/startup settings carried to about:config.. when you make a change they should be written somewhere
changing to about:newtab doesnt work
Hi smurfxyz, that's what I mean about the separate settings.
- browser.newtab.url is for new tabs (Ctrl+t) and there is no box for it in Options
- browser.startup.homepage is for the first tab(s) in a new window (Ctrl+n), and is set in the Options dialog on the General panel
What is set as your home page now?
for months when opening a new tab it went to a page that displayed 9-12 thumbnails of recent sites i had been to very useful. what is that complete url? is there a list of about:items
when opening a new tab fx seems to follow what is in about:config,,not the settings put in the options
now another prob has developed.. 100+ times a day i pop open new fx tabs from links in tbird emails(job links,,etc.) that no longer works and i have to manually copy the ink into a blank tab even restarted fx and tbird---nofix that also goes for the links in your emails from this thread since i havent done anything in tbird suspect i did something in fx
(1) Firefox only has one built-in page which shows your recent sites, which is the about:newtab page I mentioned before. When you type or paste about:newtab in the address bar and press Enter, do you get an error that the address is invalid?
(2) On the external link problem, what happens when you click it?
- Error message (what is the text of the message?)
- Firefox opens to home page, not the requested page
- Long delay before Firefox opens the page
- Firefox never opens any page
humm when opening a new tab (not window) b4 it opened to thumbs that was b4 upgrade from 26 to 27,,are you saying it shouldnt have been doing that..
when i use a link now nothing happens,,i have to rgt-clk copy link switch to fx open a new tab and paste link,,even rgt-clk open in browser doesnt work..
Hi smurfxyz, I need you to try the steps I list and report back on what happens.
When you type or paste about:newtab in the address bar and press Enter, do you get thumbnails, or do you get an error, or do you get diverted to something else?
If that works, and that is the page you want, try putting about:newtab in the places I mentioned before and see whether Ctrl+t works normally again.
I get the addr error message checked browser.startup.homepage was set to about:home changed to about:newtab new instance fx addr error change to http://www.2wire.com new instance opens 2 wire and already opened about:config registers 2wire as startup.homepage noticed that optons/advance/general default browser setting is checked but grayed out went to contr panel add/rem prog/access options/custom fx set as default
