Firefox 26 Has Completely Removed Download Progress Display
For those who are not happy with Firefox's removal of the downloads display progress bar in the 25 series, you'll be even more unhappy with the 26 series. Even typing about:config and isetting browser.download.useToolkitUI to true no longer works. I sincerely despise companies that DO NOT provide their users OPTIONS, OPTIONS. OPTIONS! Instead of pissing off a sizable number of people who prefer things the way they were. Stop changing things for the worst! I want to monitor my downloads progress without having to take an extra step by clicking on the "Library" tab. Who are you trying to impress?

Sorry to be dim, but where is this "downloads button on the Navigation toolbar"?
My Firefox (26.0) has a Navigation toolbar containing (L to R):
back and forward arrows, URL box (with star, dropdown arrow, and refresh icon), Search box (currently with Google icon and magnifying glass), Home icon.
The Downloads button should be on the Navigation Toolbar as a down pointing arrow.
Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.
- Firefox menu button > Options
- View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
- Right-click empty toolbar area
- if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
- if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

For me it needed ALT-V > Toolbars > Customize, then drag the "Downloads" icon onto a spare inch of the Navigation Toolbar. Couldn't get F10 to do anything. But all solved.

I want to thank all of those who responded to my initial message. I'm not going to belabor this issue anymore. However, it would be quite simple for the "open source" programmers just to simply place that option back into: Tools\Options\Downloads\"Show the Downloads window when downloading a file". Where there was a box that could be checked/unchecked. To me, this was the best way; allowing Firefox users that simple option. Why this simple choice was removed will never make sense to me me and legions of others. If someone can explain why this option was removed in the first place, please enlighten me.
Note that the Downloads folder in the Library is present since Firefox 8 (2011), so this is not a recent addition. Only now that the new Download Manager, that uses this folder, is being used its presence can't be overlooked.
It is the way that the classic Downloads Manager is coded.
The classic Downloads Manager runs on the main thread in Firefox and thus has effect on the performance and responsiveness (i.e. can lock Firefox in case of issues).
All code that the Library is using has been rewritten to use asynchronous database queries that run off the main Firefox thread in their own thread and aren't affecting tasks that run on the main thread.
This improves the responsiveness of Firefox in case of a large places database.
There should as less tasks as possible running on the main thread.
Other code has been or will be rewritten as well to improve the performance.
Multiple application threads can run more efficiently on multi-core processors that are common these days as the Operating System can decide on which core to run each thread.
That is , of course, how it used to be before some clever programmer decided to remove it. What needs to be said about this has been said. It's as though Mozilla have been talking to Gates and have learned NEVER to listen to the users.
