I'm being 'bombarded' with requests from FF and several other websites for me to UPGRADE my browser. Sooooo....I click on the FF Upgrade link....then something appears on my desktop...but then...NOTHING is really downloaded...that is, I STILL have the same old FF version on my PC . I get a little 'confirmation' note from FF stating that the download is complete....but, still.....NOTHING (just the same outdated FF browser). This process has repeated itself for the past several months...and it's very frustrating (to say the least).

Your User Agent shows as Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20100208 Firefox/3.5.6 in System Details on right.

If you really do have Firefox 24.0 then your user agent may need to be reset. Firefox before 4.0 can have UA over riden or made stuck at the version at time by extensions and such. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/websites-say-firefox-outdated-or-incompatible

Is there a user.js file in your Firefox profile or Firefox program directory?

If so, please delete it.

James...thanks so much for the advice / instructions....BUT....when I tried to do the 'reset', as you suggested by right-clicking those useragents, the "RESET" is not in a bold print like the other options...that is, I can see it there, but oviously nothing happens when I click on it. Soooooo...NOW what can I do?

Do all general.useragent.* prefs have the default value?

Which Firefox version do you see in Help > About and on the about:config page in these prefs ?

  • browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone
  • extensions.lastAppVersion

If you still have such an old Firefox version then it would be best to check if you meet the system requirements of the current release before trying to update.

<strike>Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Cancel these steps. Infection on the Linux operating system is rare and these steps are not needed.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back soon.

The options for installing Firefox on Linux are quite different than Windows, so I can't give you any personal advice, but maybe this article will help point the way for your distribution: Install Firefox on Linux.

Yeah guys this is an issue where Firefox didn't update on linux, his useragent is correct (If it was simply a messed p UA then he'd have trouleshooting Information, which he doesn't).

Please update Firefox using the directions Jscher gave above. Just download and install a new version of Firefox.

Make sure that if the package managed version of Firefox is outdated, you can install the executable and its files at mozilla.org as explained above.
