Could having a massive number of bookmarks affect Firefox browser performance?

I'm working on solving some major performance issues with my Firefox browser. Particularly slowness, hanging, error messages, etc.

I know one Big thing is that I need to upgrade to a newer version but before I can do that, I need to resolve some other issues, which I'm currently working on.

But I'm also researching if there are any other, obscure possibilities (such as too many bookmarks) that could negatively affect a FF browser's performance.

Probably a silly question, but I appreciate your help in furthering my education.  ;-)

yes it may slow your FFB a bit but will not affect at a higher level.

First, Firefox 9.0.1 is an old, unsupported version. Please update to the latest Firefox 24.0 version and see if your problems are gone

How many is a "massive number of bookmarks"?
2500? - 5000? - 10,000?

Back in the days before Firefox 3 a user might have problems when their bookmarks reached 2500, but with the new for Firefox 3 "places" database system those issues disappeared.

A large history is a more likely candidate for this behavior or other problems with the current profile folder like an extension.

What kind of error messages do you get?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder and temporarily rename the places.sqlite file to see if that has effect.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

Thanks. I was wondering if there might be some issues with the profile; some of the longer error messages did include references that could have indicated that. I'll definitely look in that direction. Of course, I'm well aware I'm using an antique version of FF, which I fully in tend to remedy shortly. As far as history, I don't know if you mean browsing history which I clean out at least once a day ... As for error msgs, I'll try to keep track of their content and post if useful. So thanks for this and I'll let you know how it all works out after i finish some major "remodeling."  ;-)
