Firefox's integration with Windows 8 is still a work in progress...

I can only describe what happens for me when dragging to the Windows 7 Taskbar "Links" bar (onto the word Links):

• Dragging a link from a page lets me drop it and create a shortcut that launches the page in a new tab in Firefox (my default browser).

• Dragging the current page's site icon (e.g., globe or padlock) also works.

• Dragging the URL from the address bar does not work.

Do the first two not work for you?

There is no links toolbar (unless if its in the windows toolbar) unless you are speaking of the url bar, maybe a windows based forum will help.

Thank you, but I'm using Windows 8.

The first two work up to the point that I can add the link to the list of pages I want to go. But when I click a link there so I can go to the page, nothing happens. *That* is my problem, and it's the reason I posted here, looking for help.

It's especially vexing, since this worked perfectly on my old computer, which also uses Windows 8 and Firefox (this computer is currently in the repair shop, and the problem occurred on my new, spare computer I'm using right now).

The Links toolbar worked on my old computer which is very similar to this one, so it should work, but doesn't. Is it possible that there could be a problem with the latest version of Firefox, or an add-on? I'm not an advanced user, so this is all very confusing.

I have to disagree with you that there is no links toolbar, because I have one. It just isn't working. But I will check out the other links you provided.

Hi krschwana, do desktop shortcuts to webpages (not tiles, as those work differently) launch correctly in Firefox?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I tried ebay, but nothing happened. If it worked correctly, I should have been taken to eBay, right?

Hi krschwana, yes, clicking a desktop shortcut (or a link in the links bar) should launch the page in your default browser.

Can you do the "double-switch" of making IE your default browser and then making Firefox your default browser again? Hopefully this will correct the registry entries that connect shortcuts with your default browser.

I checked out the links you provided. One is dead, one is for Windows 7, which doesn't apply to my problem because I'm using Windows 8, and I've been checking out the third.

I'm a novice and may not have the right vocabulary to explain myself. The Links toolbar is accessed from the bottom right side of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Apparently Firefox is necessary to use this, as everyone I've talked to swears it's not visible for IE.

What I'm referring to is Right-click "show hidden icons." Scroll up to Toolbars. Scroll over to Links. Check it to enable it. Then what should happen is I should be able to drag the address/url from the top of the page to this menu and click on it when I want to go back to that particular page. That is what is not working. Nothing happens when I click the addresses in the Links menu.

Hi krschwana, on earlier versions of Windows, it is not necessary to restart in order to change your default browser. I'm guessing it didn't work. What if you test with IE as your default browser. Do shortcuts/link bar items open in IE?

That's bizarre... they do. Everyone I talked to on the support places over the phone swore this feature isn't available in IE.

But they didn't work in Firefox.

Now how to get rid of all those horrible ads? Does IE have anything like Ad Block Plus?

It sounds to me as though Firefox is not able to set the correct registry entries on your new installation of Windows 8. I haven't researched that to see whether there might be a solution in another thread.

Do you have a strong preference for using the Links bar rather than Firefox bookmarks?

Would you mind researching it, please? I really would like my Links toolbar to work properly. :)

I don't like to use bookmarks because they're a hassle to keep organized. I try to use them sparingly, such as when I'm reading a multi-chapter story on a fanfiction site. I don't want to get bogged down in more, because it's too easy to get into a real mess.

I can't find anything on this problem. Admittedly I haven't read the entire web...

Since you prefer storing these links in your IE Favorites ("Favorites Bar" on the IE Favorites menu) you could consider displaying your IE Favorites on the Firefox menu bar. There is an add-on for that called PlainOldFavorites. The update supporting Firefox 22-23 is pending review, but you can install it from the Versions page and see whether you like it.
